"The floods have not come, but the sense of imminent doom is growing by the day. One measure of the fear are the protective walls of sandbags scattered across the city's canals, homes and shop-fronts are expanding in number and height daily.

"In Bangkok, it's a very surreal scene right now," our correspondent said. "It's a very beautiful day behind me but normally the roads would be absolutely choked with traffic; they are largely empty right now. They have been that way for the last 48 hours or so."

"The opposition is calling on the government to declare a state of emergency to make it easier to control people and prevent them damaging dykes to ease the flooding in their own areas." Well.....

Report from AFP dated 22 October 2011 :-

Thai floods to last four to six weeks more: Govt
===============================

BANGKOK - Thailand’s worst floods in decades are expected to last another four to six weeks as a mass of water drains from the north into the sea, the government warned on Saturday.

BANGKOK - Thailand’s worst floods in decades are expected to last another
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra warned residents in Bangkok to move their belongings at least one metre (3.3 feet) off the ground this weekend to prepare for possible inundation.

The government has launched a risky bid to drain the floodwaters in the central plains out to sea through canals in the city, which has already seen waist-deep water in parts of its northern outskirts.

“Bangkok must open all floodgates to allow the water through,” Yingluck said in her televised weekly address to the nation.

“So during this long weekend residents should move belongings, cars and other valuable things to places at least one metre high.”

About 113,000 people have been forced to seek refuge in shelters, Yingluck said, adding that while the waters were receding in some areas of the country, the floods heading towards the capital were unstoppable.

The flood situation would continue for “four to six weeks", she added.

Government spokeswoman Titima Chaisang told AFP the premier was referring to the overall flood situation in the country and not specifically in Bangkok.

Three months of heavy monsoon rains have killed at least 356 people in Thailand and damaged the homes and livelihoods of nine million people since the crisis erupted, mostly in the north and centre, the government said.

planning on coming over in 2 weeks....

But a hotel with no electric, no fresh water, no food at 7-11 does not sound like fun,

and if it really is flooded 1 meter all over town then no girls can get around to come "visit"

It sounds like a big mess, and even going to Pattaya etc will still be bad as they get supplies from Bangkok.

I hope for the best but this looks BAD

Yes you need to cancel, 2 weeks will be the worse time there. It wont just take 4-6 weeks, it will take months to recover even after the water is gone.

No Sanuk there at all, but if you like to suffer in heat (no electricity), drink contaminated water, be alone in the dark room and have no way to get proper info, then try and risk it. If I were you, I would have looked to pay a fee and reschedule the trip at least for a few months latter.

I have no fee to pay to wait till later if I cancel, and can wait till the last day,

But its hard to believe anything officials say, yes I know there are billions of gallons outside of BKK trying to get down stream,

I quess when I see pictures of 2 feet of water in areas that I go in BKK, then I will believe it,

I hope for the best, and plan for the worst !

Yes I agree you cannot believe the officials.. but its always worse than what they say....

I posted few links to live cams feeds, incl from the Landmark. Its good you can wait til last day but the danger is while you may not see water in the area you go to, the problems will still affect you as many things depends on external, out of BKK even, support. Even if your specific area is dry, you can still encounter power down and no electricity for days or phones/internet etc. Or workers whom had their houses flooded out of BKK not reporting to work. In general this is not a simple easy going event. From what you see already you can tell this is a real disaster and it still has to get way worse, not just because of the BKK flood that will come in parts of the city, but because the official word will catch up with what really happens around. You want to be in the middle of this to discover for yourself and then try to get out...? that will be more costly and painful.

I have similar situation with mid of Nov trip and also monitor indeed the issues but I am quite sure I will have to either cancel or go to another area, not BKK, maybe Chiang Mai or Phuket or such, assuming the airport will be operational (Dong Muang seems will get flooded or at least changing plans and having to travel the roads from one airport to the other maybe a problem). So in such a case, if you have an international flight and then changing to domestic could be a problem too.

I have another reservation for around Christmas if I cancel the one on Nov 7th,

Yes I think the problems will be clean water, electric, phones and food supplies,

If the same thing would happen in the USA people could be without power for weeks, thats what happened a few months ago on the east coast,

But if food supplies are low and the factories to make more are underwater that can be big trouble,
Same thing with water, beer or Cola for me

I guess its that I hate to pull the plug already, even when I know that the damage in BKK has already happened on the outskirts,

Anyway real on the ground reports help.

Best wishes to those who are there

BK
