Well, it has been confirmed by major news broadcasters here in Blighty. I find ludicrous that a PM of a foreign country wants to buy a football team with public money - Thaksin initially said that the bid was funded by taxpayer money but after the uproar from oppostion parties he's now saying that it'll be financed by both tax payers and private money! Can you imagine Tony Blair putting a bid to take control of, say Barcelona, and using tax payer money to pay for it. He would not so much be kicked out of the office but laughed out of office. Forget all the unpopular decisions that the current Thai government has taken (threatened early closure of bars, restriction on Visa and so on), what would rile tourists most is seeing Thais proudly wearing Liverpool jersey, in their thousands and walking past tourist places. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggh - time to find another holiday location! Sarge

I am a life long liverpool fan and was raised not far from Anfield. I personally think its a discrace that Thaksin can be allowed by the LFC board to buy 30% of the club. From my understanding Thaksin is making it harder for us farangs to spent any length of time in LOS and continually see's us as cash cows, as the poster above says it'll stick in our throats when we see and hear Thaksin saying about Thailand owning Liverpool FC. 98% of fans in Liverpool are against this offer, I cant understand whys it appears to be going through.

Well anon if we strip the emotion out of your comments. It appears that 'Thaksin' (very much in inverted commas) is prepared to pay US$100m for 30% of LFC without having any major say in running the business. To me that sounds like LFC gets US$100m and 'Thaksin' gets nothing or very little. As for Thaksin making it harder for farang to spend time in LOS - well you are starting from a low base. At the moment any say Liverpuddlian can turn up in Thailand with US$100 and stay here for the remains of his life as long as he is prepared to go on 3 month visa runs. You'll be lucky if you can even get the average BG into the UK let alone keep her there. Just take the money and spend it wisely. 'Thaksin' will sell back the stake at a knock down price in a few years time when the IMF are next in town.

Well Abrak, I do take your comments on board and ill try not to post with any emotion this time! I dont think for one minute that Thaksin gets nothing or very little, he'll be getting increased support from electors, a new training accadamy that will increase Thailands football stature in SE Asia. As well as the merchandising rights, if marketed correctly this is a huge income. You also say that he'll sell it back in the future, how can he if he' intends to sell a percentage of shares to the public!! I won't comment on the visa situation for Thai girls, needless to say it took me two days to get my Thai gf a visa and another week to get a settlement visa.

Abrak. you said- 'It appears that 'Thaksin' (very much in inverted commas) is prepared to pay US$100m for 30% of LFC without having any major say in running the business. To me that sounds like LFC gets US$100m and 'Thaksin' gets nothing or very little' not the case at all. Thaksin has no wish to help running the Club, but he has one condition. he owns the Merchandising Franchise and image rights of the Players and takes all the profits from this. BIG money and Liverpool are not happy about this and I don't blame them. imagine every Owen shirt sold at Anfield generates X amount of money for Liverpool. every shirt sold in Thailand would generate money for Thaksin and Liverpool are popular over there and there will be a lot of merchandise sold and Liverpool will see no money. over a 10 Year period Thaksin will make a mint and don't forget his deal includes all the TV money going to him and nothing for Liverpool. $100 Million seems a good figure, but over 10 Years it is a poor return when Thakin will earn much more than that. look at what happened when Beckham moved to Real Madrid. their rules say that 50% of any Players outside earnings are paid to the Club. so if Beckham signs a deal with Nike for £200,000 then he only gets half of that,Real Madrid get the rest. but Thaksin wants it all. but the latest news is that Thaksin has cooled on the idea because of Liverpools reservations and he is threatening to go elsewhere. his representive has cancelled a trip to Liverpool and has said things might not be sorted out for a few weeks/months. and they are looking at other Teams at the moment.

So our fearless leader is being smart eh? I dont think so... First, Liverpool is caught between a rock and a hard place. Liverpool's finances are a mess. In 2003, the club made a profit of UKP3m (2002 UKP9m but that include a big profit on the sale of Robbie Fowler to Leeds). There balance sheet shows net debt of over UKP50m. Net assets are UKP53m but that includes intangible assets of UKP58m without which the club would be insolvent (and just how much are some of Houillers recent acquisitions really worth). Accounts also show that the company's debt is secured against various players (doesnt this sound like Leeds?) Liverpool desperately need to invest in new players. There are only 3 automatic Champions League places and these seem permanently booked now by the big 3. Without serious investment, Liverpool looks like becoming an also ran. But then they have a UKP80m new stadium to finance... there is even talk of sharing a stadium with Everton (Liverpool without Anfield, God forbid!!). So there you have it... no profits a weak balance sheet and some serious expenditures. Now Morgan's bid doesnt look to attractive. A one for one rights issue to existing shareholders at UKP1,750 (34.8m shares underwritten by Morgan) and the issue of a further 7m new shares to Morgan at the same price. Shareholders who do nothing (dont take up their rights would be diluted by 60%). Set this against Thaksin's offer of UKP45m of new shares at UKP4,000/share and a further UKP15m of existing shares at the same price (presumably Granada's 9.9% stake). Existing shareholders who do nothing would be diluted by less than 30%. Liverpool desperately need money and Thaksin's offer looks totally compelling against Morgan's. Morgan can read a balance sheet and, although he loves Liverpool, he has a fair idea what the business is really worth. Thaksin's bid places a value on Liverpool over double that of Morgan. But Thaksin is going to get all the merchandising and commercial rughts to Asia which are worth a lot of money? I dont think so. I cant believe that Thaksin is going to get the TV rights simply because they are not Liverpool's to give. Liverpool gets given TV revenues from the FA, and the FA negotiates on behalf of all Premiership clubs. ESPN for instance doesnt negotiate directly with Liverpool. Merchandising revenues are worth so much less than you might imagine. Liverpool's total merchandising revenues for 2003 were just UKP11m. At least half of that comes from the UK, so I doubt total merchandising revenues from the whole of Asia are worth more than UKP3m/annum. (I suspect it is actually a lot less than this - an official Liverpool shirt costs UKP39.99 or about Bt2800. An identical one on Patpong costs Bt400.) BEC Tero have the Man Utd merchandising rights in Thailand and they believe they are practically worthless. I suspect the argument with Thaksin's men is about control over those rights. Thaksin could sell a lot of shirts if he could sell them for say Bt1000/each but that would seriously undermine European and UK shirt sales. I am sure that Liverpool would like to control their brand. Ohhh.... and again much of the merchandising revenue isnt really even going to Liverpool. When someone like Michael Owen signs a new contract, he will certainly secure for himself some control over his image rights. Bottom line is Liverpool will be prepared to give Thaksin merchandising rights to Asia because they are not getting much out of them. If Thaksin can change that....good luck to him. They will be less prepared to allow him to control the brand. If Thaksin was really getting a good deal, I think he would be using his own money. Football clubs are not good investments.... nowadays they are just billionaires toys. Thaksin is just on some massive ego trip... that he plans to finance from ill-informed local punters.

So all those dodgy brits living here by sending fake shirts back home could be in a bit of trouble... Thaksin will clean up the pirates real quick. But isn't it interesting how this conincides with the current censure motion in parliament?? He certainly read his Machiavelli...

Abrak, Good post. I would have certainly prefered Morgan myself but if the Thaksin bid is double (and reading today's Thai papers by no means certain) then I can understand the Liverpool board. I wondered if they were waiting for Morgan to match Thaksin's bid? Liverpool need to hold on to Gerrard and Owen and find a more succesful manager than Houllier. Sadly I think Houllier has lost the plot after a good start and sounds more like Roy Evans in the excuse department every day. There are dangers for Liverpool without the Thaksin offer. Houllier bought everything and nothing ?
