Petter - Holly shit!  This made it into a Norwegian newspaper!?!?!?

Wouldn't it be interesting if all of a sudden someone in the right position in the Thailand governement started getting press clippings from around the world showing what happened?

Hey all....I am visiting Thailand in a few days...with this story about the bars being "trashed" on Sukhumvit Square...were these just beer bars? Topless? Is Nana, Soi Cowboy , Patpong, etc. still going? If I'm at Nana this Saturday night, should I bring a helmet in case they demolish that?

The destruction was confined to Sukhumvit Sq - a well-defined section of real estate where there's been a long-standing property dispute.

The other beer bars etc on the other side of Sukhumvit & in the near vicinity are unaffected. Actually, that's not quite true - many of them are much better stocked with BGs than they were a week ago.

I doubt myself that this had anything to do with morality factors at all - some of the outlets destroyed were just souvenir shops, internet cafes, etc.

It has nothing to do with the social order campaign or Falangs owning business. It's just powerful people with vested interests behaving in ways that they have traditionally been allowed to in Thailand. In the course of such things, sometimes "Powers That Be" overstep boundaries by overestimating what they can get away with or by not being aware of the degree to which times change. There was a time when this wouldn't even have been reported, let alone be commented on by the PM. Whether times have changed enoguh that someone culpable will actually be sufficiently punished remains to be seen.

many places were thai owned. even the police had a couple of bars.

I know a italian who had a place there just, bought it
3 months ago. his well stocked girlfriend was running the place. now he lost about 3.5 mio. he went back to italy last night. he will never return....

If that Italian believes his bar really cost 3.5 million baht then his girlfriend (and bar manager) was already slowly doing what those guys did in one night.  I bet she was well-stocked!

she probably took commission... however, I do not know for how much keymoney these bars went, how much deposit they had to pay, and how many rents.

what I heard is that the hillary/morning2night people just sold a bar 3 months ago for 2 mio keymoney.

I actually meant that the lady in questions had rather large , nice tits and she seldom wore a bra. I guess we will find her again at beergarden cm2 and grace.

Shocking as this is, I would hope the Thai government acts fast to ensure that the perpetrators do not get away with this kind of blue murder -- whatever property dispute might have been behind the act.

The fact of military personnel bringing military equipment to carry out a private mission for a landlord speaks utterly lowly of the Thai system -- I am sorry to say. No doubt landlords in other countries too employ subversive means to evict lessees and tenants (like unexplained fires and so on) -- but this is the first such incident I have come across where military personnel and equipment have been hijacked on such a large scale by landlords with impunity and with such deadly precision that even the police were reduced to helpless spectators.

The government has a real challenge now to show who controls the country.

There was no "hi-jacking". İThe military personnel and equipment were there under orders from senior military personnel. To have the military acting as enforcers of the wishes of powerful businessmen (who sometimes are also military men) is STANDARD for Thailand and it always has been. İNot only "legitimate" businessmen are aided by the military -- vast amounts of criminal activity is is commited either with assistance by the military or directly by it.

As I said, it has always been this way. Things are slowly changing and this act was a bit too blatant to go unnoticed. Nonetheless, it's hardly unusual that the military has lost sight of its primary duty or acted for its own benefit or poewerful patrons. That's status qou.
