Pao (Srinonda) was just a front man for Pin Choonhavan, as was Pibulsongram. Pin was backed first by the Japanese (when he commanded the Thai Army in the Shan States, and then by -- well, MrJoe, you know perfectly well by what agency, and for what (at the time) seemed like not only a good reason but a noble one. The present is merely a reflection of the past.

Kaymanx The Suk Sq complex was on the same side of Sukhumvit as the Landmark & Sheraton (guests at the latter had a grandstand view of the whole business). Quite large - took up a good half of the Suk frontage between sois 8 & 10, and extended way back from the road. I think the only area it might be confused with is the similar complex on the opposite side of Suk, just past Asok & round the corner from Cowboy.

Interesting exchange between you two. You seem to know a lot about the inner workings of the Thai system. I would like to ask you both: Do you think this style of things that you refer to ["There are really only two laws in Thailand, and those are money law and gun law"] will change in the not so far away future, and if so how would those changes come to happen?

Guilty as charged. You are pretty much spot on in the first paragraph. But again, I don't know why you think that I approve of Thaksin or the way his ilk have done things for generations or need to be reminded of it. What does that have to do with dishonorable conduct by the military? Could the various vile politicians have gotten to where they are/were without at least some factions in the military's direct collusion? Is this not indicative of a military which is allowed to misapply its power? Indeed, as you well know, the poilitical establishment and the military have only recently begun to become two seperate entities.

At one level the justice system works, sort of, sometimes. At another I doubt that things will ever change. The Thais are a scofflaw people. That's why I like it here. Among other reasons. I LIKE a place where the Golden Rule applies. (He who has the gold, makes the rules.)

Whoa, Sauron you post too fast for me. My reference to your being right in you first paragraph is about the bit about me applying western (US) standards. I know quite a bit about about Pin and Pao and Pin's son, including all that you posted. Pao eventually thought he was more than just a flunky but he got his comeuppance. Absolutely correct that the same could be said about any institution including the Buddhist clergy. Why single out the military? Because that's what Kaymanx was talking about and I responded.

Again, you revert (apparently without realizing it) to referring to "misdeeds of the military" when you mean (I think) "misdeeds of some military persons" A major element in the present case concerns a RETIRED officer and his security guard (paramilitary?) private company (private army?) who were the manpower for this operation NOT the Army. Should the Thai Army be responsible for a RETIRED ofrficer and his band of rent-a-cops? No. Basically, if you accept the advice regarding this disnction (and you seem to have done so) then you and I are just arguing past each other while we are really substantially agreed. Telling the RTA to purge the "military mafia" is like telling the USArmy to purge the ringknockers. Won't happen.

I can see the point of liking such a system. But don't you think that mostly limited to those having a lotta lotta gold. It is a good system for the powerful feudal lords to sort themselves out. But lets have the masses behaving themselves nicely. ŻOtherwise, if the same system applies at all levels then it becomes too much like the wild west and anarchy would prevail.

I agree. I think we are arguing past each other for the most part. I have to log off for a bit (dinner time) but I will say only this in closing; I agree that there must be a distinction made between individuals and the institution as a whole and if i have failed to do so, that was wrong. But as I said, I do think that the rise of more than one or two nasty characters within an institution and their ability to use the institution for nefarious puposes is indicative of a problem with said institution.

Arcadius, You have confrmed my worst fears. Now I know that place. I used to pass by it almost daily -- that sprawling place somewhere in the region opposite the Clinton Plaza. You go round the corner into the bylane and you had those couple of internet cafes and a little further down a massage parlour. Jut last week I had a very good satisfying massage there and my heart bleeds now for those poor little darlings. Your comparison with the similar complex around the Cowboy was helpful to me in identifying the place. Indeed that Suk complex housed many pool and beer bars and had a sprawling frontage on the main road. I hope the phoenix shall arise again.
