Delta, If you want to get into a business in Thailand find one that assists the Thais other than encouraging the women to become BG's. How about teaching language or writing skills or cooking skills......teach a Thai how to open and run an american style restraunt. Open a laundry or a beauty parlor and use your expertise to market it to the tourists.....pay percentages to the help so that they get well also. Lots of stuff. Find some thais that you can trust and help finance a business that makes them rich and you semi rich.

yep...i'm reading casey post like 5 times already!

well i have a couple of ideas...having a small internet startup in which my friend would from time to time find some jobs for me. the other ideas are like what you did mention...in the food and beverage line. perhaps get a cafe franchise which is new in LOS, there are other more ideas looking at where the thai cultural acceptance is heading.
i would want to steer away from the BG and all...but how successful would the business be?
anyways a lot of things are in the works right now and well...after hearing what has happen to Butznutz...its not reassuring to open any form of setup.
my thai friend told me that i need good backing and need to have strong relations with 'powerful' thais in order to make it in thailand.

The various Au Bon Pain around BKK I see do a good trade....but things go in fads....like the milk bars......all the years and things I know and love about Thailand....I'd never do business in Thailand personally......but I've no real business acumen.....I'm happy to live here and be salaried......(No....not from overseas...LOL)

Delta - We'll find out soon. The first Subway in Thailand, in BKK as a matter of fact, opened just recently.
Granted, labor cost would probably be the least of one's worries but with sufficient stock prep, that can easily be done by a single person in about 4 hours, three people behind the counter are all that are really needed.
You go in and prep from 7:00 am to opening and then come in at closing for a couple of hours to run the till and check wastage and you're done.
Yes, there is a bit more to it than that but compared to other franchizes available, it's pretty hard to do better.

How about an employment service for Thais wanting to work for American companies......training, connections, etc. Let the companies pay for the presecreening just like they do in the US. Or better yet a temp agency. I am sure that it helps to know influential Thais but if you are reasonably small, providing a "good" service to Thais and not exploiting them and if your primary customers are European or US firms you should not have too much problem.

I forgot, one of the things I noticed about Thailand is that they have no mexican food (del taco, taco bell, etc). Seems like with the hot sauces etc that the food might go very well there. If you want to make it simple start your own and franchise it out if successful.
