Is it just me or has there been lots of tourists dying in Thailand under mysterious circumstances lately?

British tourist found dead off Samui island

The body of a 21-year-old female British tourist was found Monday floating in waters off the southeastern Thai resort island of Samui, police said.
The woman was identified as Catherine Horton of Cardiff, Wales, and her corpse was discovered by a man who rents jet skis to tourists.
Horton, who arrived in Thailand on December 27 and reached the island on December31, was travelling with a fellow student, police said.
"We don't know the cause of death yet," police major Thanongsak Aksornsom, chief investigator on Samui island, told AFP. He declined to comment on a Thai television report that Horton had been raped before being murdered.
"The body will sent for an autopsy," Thanongsak said.
British embassy staff could not be reached for comment late Monday./Agence France-Presse

Story just made the AOL news page - autopsy in BKK confirmed she was hit on the head, dragged and presumably dumped in the sea. The female travelling companion of the deceased said she was last seen walking along the beach, alone, talking to her folks back in UK on her mobile phone, wishing them Happy New Year etc.
The report does not make clear if the attack took place during the day or night though the context would suggest it happened after midnight local time. A tragic event, but walking alone, along a presumably empty beach late at night, talking into a mobile in a foreign country is not my idea of a wise move, especially if you are a single female. I tend to be wary of using my mobile late at night in public here in the UK and I am a 6ft bloke!
No mention is made of a sexual motive, so possibly a robbery that went sour.

For me its diffult to understand the expectation of the traveller: its like they believe to have signed in for a full comprehensive cover.
There is no application of even minimum commonsense, there are no-no's, like not using a condom or the like. There are things you would never do at home - where you can easily read the signals and have local knowledge, so why would you do it abroad with nil understanding of the different alert levels, values and cultures.
You want to win a fortune by trading online stocks but dont want to take a risk. I simply doesn't go together.
If you dont apply the least commonsense you get taught a lesson - its like not watching the traffic before crossing a road.
Nevertheless I feel utterly sorry for those being concerned.

I've just been told on the phone (unconfirmed as yet) that the two guys accused of the murder of catherine Horton have been sentanced to death.
Now that was a long drawn out trial........Judicial efficiency Thaksin style.
You just gotta admire the man!!

Mr Jacobi didn't look far, there was a Thai monk sentenced to death for murder several years ago. I say monk in loose terms, he was a habitual criminal forced into the monkhood, if I remember correctly, as part of his parole conditions.
