... come hell or high water, sex tourists are undetered by anything short of Final Days... during the May riots and marshall law, bars about town were empty, but even then, Soi Cowboy still enjoyed SOME activity.

... yeah, weather is a non-issue for hard core punters... but, when you live here as me, it is damn nice (even 'dandy') to go outside and not have to seek relief in the shadow of a f***ing telephone pole.

... the thing about BKK traffic... it is an unsolvable problem that will only get worse as higher earnings here support more and more car owners... my solution for being happy living in BKK is to never get in a car... there are exceptions, but 85% of my world is within a 4 minute walk radius of a BTS/MRT Station.

Thailand may be hit by devastative storm: Suwit
==============================

A storm with devastating effects like typhoons Gay and Linda may hit Thailand later this year, according to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti.

"I am quite concerned about this possibility," Suwit said Tuesday.

He said he made the grim prediction based on presently-available information.

Suwit said relevant agencies were now closely monitoring the situation and he urged people to keep abreast of weather updates.

"People will have to prepare necessary measures to deal with the powerful storm if it arises," he said.

... as most elected and appointed Thai government officials, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti is a village idiot.

... NOAA, with some of the world's fastest computers and most sophisticated predictive modelling software ever written at it's disposal, can do no better than looking out 24-36 hours in front of a storm, and still be orders of magnitude off when predicting its movements.

... and, the Thai village idiot Suwit is going to warn us of a devastating storm later this year?.. (awww, what a gooood heart he has!... so thoughtful!)

... pul-lease!

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 14 December 2010 :-

More heavy rain forecast after traffic chaos in Bangkok
=======================================

Unseasonable showers will continue to soak Greater Bangkok today before the winter's cool weather returns, according to the Meteorological Department.

"It's not often that rain falls in December but this is not something unexpected. It has nothing to do with climate change or global warming," said Somchai Bai-muang, deputy director-general of the department.

Rain will linger because a westerly trough still prevails over the upper part of the country, he said.

Early yesterday, torrential downpours surprised

Bangkok commuters who found themselves stuck in traffic jams for hours.

At least 284 road accidents were reported in the capital, killing three people and injuring 44.

"At the time of the accidents, roads were slippery because of the rain," said Jaiton Sriwangpon, a host for the FM91 Traffic Pro radio station.

Heavy rain began pouring down at 1am. By the time commuters left home for work or school, many roads were flooded and treacherous.

Among them were major arteries such as Sukhumvit and Ratchadaphisek.

"When faced with slippery conditions, some drivers get easily panicked and apply the brakes suddenly. Vehicles that follow then hit theirs from behind, causing pile-ups," Jaiton said.

The roads with the most crashes were Ratchadaphisek, Ramkhaemhaeng, Rama IX, Vibhavadi-Rangsit, Paholyothin, Pattanakarn, Borommaratchachonnanee and Teparak.

Apart from accidents, the heavy rain caused a traffic nightmare.

Jaiton said the tailback on the inbound lanes of Bang Na-Trat Road stretched as far as kilometre marker 3. Inbound Sukhumvit Road was backed up all the way to Provincial Hall, she said.

"Traffic jams were also reported on Srinakharin, Paholyothin, Phetchaburi, Thon Buri, North Sathorn and Charan Sanitwong roads," she said.

The traffic congestion dragged on almost until noon. Many workers arrived at their offices late.

Yesterday was the first workday after the long weekend that started on Friday. Those who were returning from their holiday to the Mor Chit bus terminal were stuck inside the station because of the rain and insufficient taxis and transport to get around.

Report from The Nation dated Thursday 24 March 2011 :-
Bangkok hobbles during morning rush hour after heavy downpours
========================================

Bangkok traffic flows during morning rush hours yesterday became paralyzed after the city was hit by heavy rains and gusty wind causing three traffic lanes to be blocked by fallen trees and flooding condition covering 23 spots of main roads.

Following heavy downpours since 4.30am until late morning yesterday traffic jams became severe especially in Thon Buri's Kanchanapisek, Borommaratchachonnani, Arun Amarin roads as well as Phra Pinklao Bridge, Rama 8 Bridge as heavy rains caused slippery roads resulting several accidents. The Paholyothin's Lat Phrao Intersection until the Victory Monument, Din Daeng, Ratchadapisek and Rama 9 areas as well as Bang NaTrat, Sri Nakarin, Sukhumvit, and Ramkhamhaeng roads also suffered heavy congestion as some roadsurface spots were flooded.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Department of Drainage and Sewerage director Sanya Chenimit said the amount of rainfall in Bangkok yesterday early morning was measured as 70120 millimeters hence many flooding conditions especially at Paholyothin, Chaeng Wattana and Ngamwongwan roads but all should be back in normal two hours after.

Bangkok traffic police chief Pol MajGen Panu Kerdlarppol said the traffic police report of morning rush hours stated there were flooding condition covering 23 spots of main roads including the Asoke Montri Intersection, the Soi Sukhumvit 11 to Rajaprasong Intersection, the Sutthisarn Road, the Suwinthawong Road, the Soi Sukhumvit 101105, and the Interior Ministry Intersection to Soi Lat Phrao 64 and Thium Ruammit Intersection. Three traffic lanes; one at Khamphaengpetch 2 Road behind Chatuchak Park, the other at Thium Ruammit Road in front of True Building and another at the mount of Soi Silom 9, were blocked by fallen trees causing traffic jams.

Meanwhile, Chon Buri's Pattaya City residents were frighten of 'tsunami like in Japan' after the city was hit by heavy rains and gusty winds early yesterday morning, causing signboards and trees to collapse, a blackout, flooding condition in various areas and subsequent traffic jams while many resident homes were also damaged by strong wind - but the authority affirmed there was no such tsunami gathering in the Pattaya Bay.

In Ubon Ratchathani, a storm which had hit the Muang district area since Tuesday evening damaged a total of 81 houses in Tambon Khilek including the tambon administrative organization's office, the Tambon Khilek president Pramuan Pimlor said yesterday. He added that he initially requested for construction materials to help repairs the affected homes.

In related news, Meteorological Department yesterday warned the lower Northern, central and upper Southern Thailand of summer storms, possible hail storms and temperature drop during the March 2325 period.

While Director South Eastern Coast Meteorological Center Wanchai Sakundomchai urged small boats to shore due to strong wind/high wave in the Gulf of Thailand and warned eastern coastal people of heavy rains during this period until March 26, Pattani provincial governor Nipon Narapitakkul said that Pattani's 12 districts would be affected with heavy rains this period and many areas already had flooding conditions, thus disaster prevention and mitigation officials now watched out for flash flood and landslide while 1,000 small fishing boats were told to stay ashore at the Pattani Bay port until the situation went back to normal.

Wild weather grips the nation - Temperatures plunge, storms wreak havoc
=============================================

Thailand is expected to experience more unseasonal weather patterns this week causing more floods, rough seas, storms and cold temperatures, meteorology officials warn.

A further drop in temperatures in most parts of the country and continued heavy rainstorms over the southern region during the next few days have been forecast.

Heavy downpours and turbulent seas have caused flash floods in at least six southern provinces, disrupting land, sea and air travel and causing devastating damage to farmland and property in many areas.

Local and foreign high-season tourists were caught off-guard by heavy rainstorms while celebrating their summer holidays in popular southern tourist provinces.

Thousands of tourists were stranded on Koh Samui after bad weather forced the closure of the island's only airport and the suspension of the ferry service to and from the mainland yesterday.

Airline personnel were unable to provide exact departure periods for those stranded as bad weather continued into the night.

Roads in the densely populated tourist areas of Chaweng and the fishermen's village of Bophut are submerged under nearly a metre of flood water.

Compounding problems for international travellers are fully booked flights from Koh Samui because it is still the busy tourist season on the island. Bangkok Airways personnel said they will give priority to passengers with international connections if weather conditions improve tomorrow.

Several hundred more tourists were also reportedly stranded on islands at Similan National Marine Park in the Andaman Sea because of the turbulent weather.

Waves in the Gulf of Thailand and on the western coast were reported to be as high as 5m, forcing fishermen and tour boat operators to temporarily suspend their services.

At least eight people have died - seven in Nakhon Si Thammarat and one in Phatthalung - while more than 268,000 households have been affected by severe floods covering Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Trang, Surat Thani, Chumphon and Songkhla.

But in other parts of the country, 47 provinces, particularly in the north and northeastern regions, have been declared as drought-affected areas with more than seven million people affected.

Weather officials said yesterday they could not say why the high pressure wedge has continued to prevail from China.

"If the influence of the high pressure remains strong, we will see more and more rain in the South," Weather Prediction Division chief Charoon Laohalertchai said.

He said the unusually heavy rainfall in the southern provinces was likely to be a result of the La Nina phenomenon.

The amount of rainfall in Nakhon Si Thammarat during the past week was higher than the province's year-long average of 200mm. In some places of the province, the amount of rain was more than 600mm in five days, which is higher than the average annual rainfall in the central region.

"We expect to see a declining amount of rain by the end of this month, together with a declining influence of La Nina by the middle of this year," Mr Charoon said. However, he said the increasing temperature in the Andaman Sea was an important factor that might lead to more rainstorms in May and June over Phuket and other provinces along the west coast.

The Meteorological Department predicted yesterday the temperature in north, northern, eastern and central provinces, including Bangkok and nearby cities would decrease by three to five degrees Celsius from today.

Residents living in several provinces in the lower Northeast have experienced a sharp drop in temperatures during this summer season.

In Nakhon Ratchasima, a cold spell gripped the province yesterday with Pak Chong district experiencing the lowest temperature at 16.1C.

The temperature dropped to 12C at Phu Rua district in Loei and 5.5C at the top of Phu Rua national park.

In the North, cold spells have also gripped the region, with the temperature on Doi Inthanon, the country's highest peak, measured at 7.8C yesterday.In lowland areas, average temperatures were between 18C to 23C.
