Over 2,000 cattle killed by unseasonable cold spell in Chiang Mai
=====================================

Unseasonal cold weather in the North has killed more than 2,000 heads of cattle in Chiang Mai's Om Koi district, with a sharp temperature drop to 7 Celcius degrees in affected areas in the past few days.

Livestocks officials are paying inspection visits to farmland and cattle farms to advise handlers to prepare the animals to cope with the cold, while giving medicines and germ killing drugs to prep up their health. In Chaiyaphum, where average temperature is 17 degrees, handlers are advised to make bonfire to give heat to their cattle.

... a reporter friend told me today that the Royal Thai Navy dispatched the HMS Boondogle (recall, the bazillion baht decommissioned rust bucket aircraft carrier purchased from a Spanish demolition yard?... for a navy with no carrier capable aircraft, or pilots) from it's comfy Laemchabang berth, from whence it rests and rusts on display for tourists... their mission is to evacuate the stranded from Koh Samui.

... might be a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire... hope they don't ground her... the only way it could be worse is if the stranded were being evacuated on a Royal Thai Navy sub!... now, a Thai submariner is a brave soul!

... my friend said the joke about the press room is that the relic subs with which the Thai politicians are about to reward the Royal Thai Navy are being refurbished... crew will have to step onto the captain's bunk to access the mast's main hatch.

Freezing temperatures a 'freak event'
===========================

The sudden plunge in temperatures last week could be a rare climatic phenomenon, according to a Thai expert.
Assistant Professor Prateung Jintasakul of Rajabhat Nakorn Ratchasima University said the mercury plunged unusually sharply in the Northeast to 15-16 degrees Celsius from March 28 to 31, even though it is summer.

The academic said the same thing occurred during the Ice Age 10,000 years ago when pandas fled extreme cold in China to northeastern Thailand.

In 1982, fossils of pandas were found in the northeast province of Chaiyaphum by a French anthropologist. The fossils could be dated back to the Ice Age.

"The evidence shows that the pandas from China fled to the warmer areas in Chaiyaphum, so it wouldn't be a surprise if this extreme climate change is going to happen again.

"However, that's just a possibility and we will have to closely monitor the further development of climate change to find out a more accurate explanation.

"So far, it's not yet conclusive but it certainly is highly unusual. What happened during March 28-31 could also be attributed to alteration of the Earth's axis or magnetic field etc."

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 4 April 2011 :-

North, South on high alert -- Residents brace for more landslides and storms
=================================================

The National Disaster Warning Centre has warned people in the South to remain on high alert for more mudslides over the next two days.

The centre said land in several areas has continued to absorb water, leading to continued risk of landslides.

People in the North and the Northeast are also warned to be on alert for more stormy weather between tomorrow and Thursday.

Residents have been alerted to the threat of thunderstorms and strong winds as a result of a ridge of high pressure expected to move across the regions.

The Public Health Ministry is sending psychiatrists to help victims suffering from stress in the flood-ravaged southern provinces.

Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit said yesterday the ministry had sent mobile medical units to the flood-hit South since March 26.

Fourth Army chief Udomchai Thammasarotrat said yesterday Their Majesties the King and the Queen have donated 500,000 baht to help victims in the South.

The money has been given to the Fourth Army through the army chief, Lt Gen Udomchai said.

Kitti Rattanasombat, director of Tha Sala hospital in Nakhon Si Thammarat, said the hospital reopened yesterday after floodwaters receded. Full service was expected to resume today, he said.

Nisit Sombat, director of Nakhon Si Thammarat airport, said floodwaters there had receded but engineers still needed to check the runway and signalling systems before flights could resume. Mr Nisit said he expected the airport to reopen on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, many villages in Sichon district of Nakhon Si Thammarat have been inundated by mud washed down from the mountains after days of torrential rain. Illegal logging is said to have contributed to the severity of the catastrophe.

Former tambon Saophao chief Prayoon Sae Hao said houses located along the road linking Nakhon Si Thammarat to Surat Thani were flooded by one metre of water.

He said the flooding also destroyed vast areas of his palm and rubber plantations.

Suneeporn Promkhiri, a villager from Ban Ton Liang, said torrential rain on the evening of March 31 triggered flash floods.

Her family had to struggle to get to the second floor of the house while their belongings were washed away.

She said residents living in one-storey houses had to seek refuge at other people's two-storey houses.

Ms Suneeporn added that trees in her 15-rai palm plantation were uprooted.

Thawil Suwanwong, a former agriculture official, blamed the flooding on illegal logging activities cand forest encroachment.

He criticised the government and state authorities for promoting the planting of rubber and palm trees and trying to boost their prices.

The higher prices had encouraged people to clear forest areas to grow rubber and palm trees, he said.

But now the rubber and palm plantations have been destroyed by the flooding.

"Nature has taken its revenge," he said.

About 300 people from four villages have been evacuated to Ban Phuen school in tambon Thepraj, Sichon district.

Sixteen houses have been destroyed by mudslides, while some roads have been wiped out by the floods.

Thanong Jomrit, a villager at Moo 15 in tambon Thepraj, said he and his family, including a three-month-old baby, had to flee up a mountain after his house was hit by floodwater and mudslides on March 30.

Report from APF dated 4 October 2011 :-

Thailand's 'worst' floods leave 224 dead
==========================

BANGKOK - Thailand's worst monsoon floods in decades have killed 224 people and affected three quarters of the country, including part of the ancient city of Ayutthaya, officials said Tuesday.

Two months of flooding have inundated 58 of Thailand's 77 provinces - with 25 still severely affected - and damaged the homes or livelihoods of millions of people, according to the government.

"It's the worst flooding yet in terms of the amount of water and people affected," said an official at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation who preferred not to be named.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram, one of Ayutthaya's best known temples, has been closed to visitors after a makeshift dyke was breached at the former capital, a popular tourist destination north of Bangkok.

"The water level inside the temple grounds is now 1.50 metres," said Supoj Prommanoch, head of the Fine Arts Office in Ayutthaya, located north of the capital Bangkok.

But he said the authorities were confident they could prevent the floods from reaching Ayutthaya's main World Heritage Park, which is located further away from Chao Phraya River.

The northern city of Chiang Mai, another popular tourist destination, has been badly hit and the authorities are battling to stop the floods reaching central Bangkok.

"The current flood situation is the worst that I have ever seen and it will last until the first week of November," said independent flood expert Royal Chitradon, director of Thai Integrated Water Resource Management.

"There is a problem of prolonged flooding in central provinces because roads and cities have blocked natural waterways," he said.

Royal said several reservoirs in Thailand are already full and the western and eastern outskirts of Bangkok are at risk of flooding because of another approaching tropical storm.

Last week the government announced the deployment of about 10,000 soldiers, backed by 500 military vehicles and more than 100 boats, to help victims.

On the bright side there will be more fresh girls in the bars as families pressure them to go to the big city and send back some money as their crops can no longer be harvested.
