where has all the good comedy gone,
before we had loads, blackadder, the young ones, fawlty towers, benny hill, monty python, dads army, some mothers do 'ave' them, porridge,auf wiedersehen pet, only fools and horses (thank god thats still going).
todays modern comedy is no where near and yes oz the office is pretty good, the only comedy that sticks out today.

IMO "Phoenix Nights" with Peter Kaye is as good as "The Office".
Neither however are as good as " The After Skool"

Got to agree with you about Life of Brian and Spinal Tap but I have to pull you up on one thing - Spinal Tap is an American film. The main characters are American, as is the Director. It is an easy mistake to make though given the quality of their 'cockney' accents. Defintely the best I have ever heard from yanks, who usually end up in Dick van Dyke (Mary Poppins) territory.
Talking of how easy it is to make mistakes, I just got hold off the Spinal Tap Special Edition DVD (highly recommended, has 125 minutes of missing scenes) and noticed that I have spelt my user name wrong!! Should be Joe mama Besser (one of the many dead drummers).
As for quality of tv programmes, when I was home at the end of last year they were running The Office 2, Pheonix Nights 2 and Alan Partridge on Monday's, Tuesday's and Thursday's. Even during the golden days of the 70's/80's I doubt whether they ever matched that level of quality.
For a truely great stand up routine try to catch Peter Kaye's 'Live at the top of the Blackpool Tower'. You can buy it on t'internet!!

i knew the director from spinal tap was american but I did think the band was from england, oh well I must be spanked.
i forgot about pheonix nights and alan partridge, both of them make me piss my pants of laughter.
now for stand up comedy, I have seen peter kaye at blackpool and I thought good but not that good, expatchuck is right on billy connally in his early days but for me it has to be lee evans, I have see this man live and he is just awesome.
