The name they give you is real to them, but it is just a nickname. Thai first names are very long and can be difficult to say. The official names are governed by a bunch of superstitions, and must take into account the day and time that you are born. So maybe if you are born on a certain day of the week they come up with Kamol (a boy's name) because it has no vowels (in Thai). But then they see the kid is kind of small so they name him Lek (little). Or the girl's name is Wissanee or Duangthida, but her father called her Nok(bird). Or Noi (small) because she is just a little thing.
Now to complicate this, Thais often use different names for different parts of their life. So maybe Nok is Nok at work, but Noi back home. Or she goes to a fortune teller who says that her luck is flying away like a bird and she should change her name to something different. Since she is anyway a little doll, she changes her name to Dtukdta (doll).
Now sometimes the Thai names are transformed similar to Western names, like Wissanee may become just Nee to her school mates. But Nee doesn't sound too professional for her Western colleagues (non-BG) so she uses Neeke at work.
Simple enough, no?

Some of the working girls would change their nick name as they move from club to club. I know that many of the MP girls would move to another MP about once every two or three month. They want to appear as "new" girl at a new place.
Therefore, the same girl may be call "Fon" at one place and when she move to another place, she maybe calling her self "Jab".

Hello all -
Hmmm - what's in a name? I chose the handle "snowbird" because where I'm from in northern Canada, this is what we call people who are able to leave here in the late fall when the snow is about to fly, and return in the spring when the snow is disappearing. They get to enjoy our gorgeous summers, but when things get miserable they're off to warmer southern climates. Someday I'm going to be a true "snowbird" myself, but in the meantime I have to be content with a few weeks off a year, preferably spent during our winter in the LOS.
I just left BKK on March 27, and two days from now I have to go to the bloody arctic coast for a couple of weeks, where it's still full scale winter - and work outside. Imagine the contrast to steamy BKK! I envy you guys that get to spend so much time there.

I'd been wondering about your name, Supaporn. I worked with a couple of people with this name and I'd thought it was a feminine name, although it's often tough to tell with Thai names (I always got a devious kick out of the name Kittiporn).
