As long as you're learning, that's all that matters. Yes, the learning curve is steep. When I took the class, many dropped out because they didn't want to spend the time learning to read and write because it was too time consuming or they were simply incapable. Most, including myself, just wanted to learn to speak. Looking back at the hours upon hours of studying that Benjawan Poosam book and memorizing all the consonants and vowels and tone rules, it took a helluva lot of work and dedication.

Good luck Max. Hope you advance to Peter's class.

I have 30 lessons from Pimsleur and they are helpful.
I also use Benjawan and even Linguaphone. You need
variety or you start answering by rote. Just got the Rosetta
Stone series and it's a whole different philosophy, which
may also be beneficial.

Finding the time to attend is harder than the lessons; the
wat isn't in the most convenient location for me.

Sweet, and good luck to you - I will try to swing by, especially since I heard the Thai Food Court at the temple will be going away (anyone else confirm that?)

Can confirm this. There was a big article in one of the Thai newspapers this week. The residential neighborhood surrounding the temple has been complaining to the city about the temple attendees street parking for years and now the city has apparently done something about this.

Spoke to a Thai friend who lives nearby Wat Thai who also confirms that this weekend will be the last weekend for the open market food courts.

The article mentioned something about Wat Thai building a proper parking structure to accommodate the overflow of cars, but this could take a few months or years.

I went a few weeks ago and....I parked in a cul-de-sac (non yanks might not get that) and when I left there were 3 women going door to door with a petition and it must have been related to this..

I hope they do work it out, because the Wat is a very cool place to eat some pretty good ka pow kai & kow neow and just people watch..

When we move, the biggest things I will miss about LA is obviously the weather but a close second is all the hot asian chicks.....

Dumb ass neighbors... Too bad the city, for once, acted on such issues... though I fail to see what reason was given. Just a petition?

Dumb ass neighbor ladies.

It was just a matter of time. That neighborhood used to be mostly poor hispanic families, but housing prices in LA have sent a more upscale flood of 'neighbors', who take exception to, and are more vocal about not being able to leave their homes on Sundays, for fear of losing their parking places. Not to mention the driving style of many of the temple attendees, imported from Bangkok...

As for Dara's class, she is not particularly sensitive to farangs' difficulties with the tone issue. Rather, she teaches the Thai way - rote.

There was a teacher there maybe 8 - 9 years ago named Jeab, who was the best I have ever encountered. She really helped with hearing the tones, and vocalizing them correctly. She was a TRAINED language teacher, and really took her business quite seriously. The 'light bulb' came on for me under her tutelage. I think she is teaching in Thailand now, somewhere.

When I first went to a Thai language class at Wat Thai LA, they were taught in the basement of the temple, way back behind where they now sell food. A woman named Nancy had students who were mostly doctors, doing some sort of medical charity missions to Isaan. Most of them had Thai GFs, and were learning to read their letters. This was way before they built the school building.

A little later, after they opened the building, I sat in a non-aircon classroom with about a half dozen farangs, listening to Thai tapes. The 'teacher's' main function was to press the start and stop buttons on the little boom box that played the tape...the guy next to me was on the way to take ownership of the Texxan in Washington square, having just retired from his business in LA.

Old times, good times.
