Or randomly announce that everyone has to pay double... that usually gets everyone's attention.

It was my impression that the hour was devoted to the BTF RT. If the uniformity of the RT for out of town visitors is maintained then there will be no problem free drinks or no free drinks.
To me this idea feels like a 'cost saving' approach. If that is the intention, fine, but call it that.
On the other hand a set hour with 2 for one drinks (or half price) has more appeal for me since I do think its important for small establshments like Toxic to make it's nut.
If the idea is to have guys hang around for 3 hours instead of just one hour, it will fail since even with one hour of free drinks some guys come and go after one drink having said their hellos.
Making it every two weeks might make it more special.
And 'It was suggested to me.....'? Uh huh

Here’s my take…
Happy Hour, 2 for 1 Drink Specials, Free Drinks, etc should not be the reason BTN RT members show up. It is for all of us to have a scheduled place to meet and greet, pass on stories, brag about conquests, whose lady is better looking, etc. I may be wrong, but I hope not.
Monthly RT events were a nice idea but it ALWAYS seemed to happen either before I arrived or after I left. Weekly events are working out great so far and if the main reason to try and ‘shake things up’ is to stop the moochers, then go for it!!! I for one don’t really care about ‘free drinks’ on a nightly basis. Hell, I spend more buying around or most nights, many rounds for the bar staff because I choose to.
Let’s try and keep this simple. Random weekly “Happy Hour” will work and if the few “Cheap Charlie’s” get offended or miss out … better luck next week…555.
Think about this … Set the next weeks Happy Hour at the end of each weeks event. Only give out the details to newly arriving members that are scheduled to arrive that week. Those in attendance will have the info if needed for the next weeks event.
Just my thoughts…

But the "free bar for one hour" is a money-maker for Toxic, in my opinion. Changing it will only result in reduced income that night for Toxic, in my opinion.

IMHO the normal BTF memebers who want to just meet up with fellow members will not give a shit when the happy hour is. Personally I would not even care if there was one.
The only people who will be upset if RTB was the change things are the balloon chasers.
I say blow them and let the rest enjoy a good night out.

Good one Paddy. In fact why not just allow free drinks for absolutely new members who have never been to an RT before - that way regular members support the bar and new members get a one-off gracious welcome.

My advice: Stop thinking too much!
Weekly RT is a great thing! In my 3 trips to Bangkok, I only managed to go to the RT once (priorities, you know. Girls, you know).
Free drinks is not a motivation for me to join, but I do believe it is both a good business idea and a goodwill booster for Toxic to continue with the 1 hour free drinks every week.
Just stay with the program, I say. The program gets even better when people get used to it, tradition is mostly a good thing.
And I'm Norwegian, so I got to be right.

We enjoyed several "Happy hours" in Toxic....so much so that my head hurts this morning.
Whatever, if RTB is smart enough to market the Bar via an hour a week of Open Bar.....good for him.... it's a damn side more than most other places offer.
