Third times a charm – Go Bucks.
Ohio State has already had their charm in January 2003 with their miracle win (phantom pass interference call) against Miami in the BCS title game. If there is God, they will not win the BCS title game again for many years to atone for that sin.

BTW, smart money is that 2 or 3 Buckeyes will be leaving for the pros.

The BCS was designed for only one thing, to make sure the number 1 and 2 ranked teams meet in a bowl game. Before the BCS, this rarely happened because some of the bowls had commitments to certain conferences (such as PAC-10 and Big-10 Champs always played each other in the Rose Bowl). This problem has been fixed.

The BCS system is fine when there are a few clear-cut top teams. But this year showed just how flawed the system is. With so many one and two loss top tier teams no one really knew who should have been playing in the Championship game. OSU fell into the game by default (loses by WV and Kansas), and LSU was pushed into the game by AP and Coaches polls that vaulted them over other teams in the last week simply because they wanted LSU in the championship game – not because they were really the best two teams in the nation. I mean how did LSU go from seventh to second in the polls and vault over Georgia?

So Georgia went from being fourth to ending up fifth and stuck playing Hawaii. Missouri got royally screwed by the system and Kansas took a right good thumping from the BSC system as well. It’s fair to say the Rose bowl also got screwed by the system this year with a lack luster BigTen conference they got stuck with Illinois when it probably should have been Ohio State – while the two true top teams played in the Championship game (maybe LSU and Georgia). The only team that really seemed to benefit from the system this year was Ohio State – go Bucks.

This year the BSC system screwed too many teams and the fans as well.

It would be very difficult to extend the season another 3 games and expect the players to even pretend they are in college to get an education.

Actually there would be no need to extend the season at all.

Eight teams play 2nd to last week of Dec, Four teams play New Years day, Championship game one week later - same as this year.

And they are getting an education in exactly what they went to college for – playing football.

But they are sure to lose less players than they did last year, and almost certain to return the QB, RB, and at least one and probably both WR’s. Probably the toughest game of their season will be played in Sept (USC), so they will have plenty of time to creep back up the standings should they lose that one.

I wouldn’t call holding a player prior to the ball reaching them much of a “phantom” call. And I am not sure what was so miraculous about the win either, they we in it pretty much the whole game. It was Miami that needed to score the final 10 points to push the game into overtime in the first place.

Did they move New Orleans after the Hurricane?

I think there are some misconceptions here.

As I explained previously, the purpose of the BCS is not really to choose the number 1 and 2 teams, but to make sure they play each other in the title game. The BCS relies heavily on polls (and to a lesser degree computer rankings) to decide who the number 1 and 2 teams are, just as was the case in determining the national champs before the BCS. These same polls (Coaches Poll, Harris Poll, and previously AP Poll) all existed before the BCS was invented. Most of the computer rankings also existed before the BCS existed. Before the BCS, these same polls determined the national champions, without having any influence over who plays whom in the bowl games.

Before the BCS, teams from certain conferences were locked into certain bowl games. For example, prior to the BCS, the Rose Bowl always had the Big 10 vs PAC 10 champs play each other. The SEC champs played in the Sugar Bowl, and Big 12 played in the Orange. The BCS has fixed that problem, as was evident 2 years ago when Texas beat USC in the Rose Bowl, which is a game that never could have happened prior to the BCS.

The Rose Bowl was not "screwed" this year. They chose to have the Big 10 and PAC 10 champs play each other, which they are allowed to do so long as neither of those teams were the 1 or 2 ranked team (in which case those teams would be obligated to play in the BCS championship game). The Rose Bowl could have chosen different teams if they desired, but they value the "tradition" (personally I think it sucks, but it is their bowl game and they can do what they want--within the BCS rules).

Georgia? They lost to a South Carolina team that finished 6-6. They lost to Tennessee by 21 points, which if they won that game would have allowed them to play LSU for the SEC championship. So that is why Georgia did not play in the BCS title game.

College football is a different than many sports in that the rankings are primarily based on the entire season of play, not just on how good you are at the end of the season. So if a team is by far the best in the country, but a key player is injured for a few weeks and loses 3 games during the injury, then even if the key player returns at the end of the season, that team will not likely be in the BCS title game (based on having 3 loses earlier in the season). USC and Oregon are excellent examples of this.

In college football every game counts and is extremely important, not just the last few games of the season, or not just the playoff games. Losing a particular game during the season (even the first game of the year) can determine whether a team has a chance to play for the championship. That is one thing that actually makes college football more enjoyable to watch in contrast with NFL games, where any one game during the season (such as the game you are watching at that moment) means very little.

They need those weeks in between the last game and New Years to study for and take final exams, and find someone to write those term papers for them.

And as I previously said, there would be even more complaining from the nuber 9 and 10 teams as to why they did not make the playoffs. It is usually much harder to distinguish the number 7, 8, 9, and 10 teams between each other than it is to distinguish the number 1 and 2 teams from everyone else.

Actually, I think they took what was left of NO after GWB destroyed it, planted some palm trees in the dome, threw some sand around and got some Ho's off of Bourbon Street and put grass skirts on them.

Most Georgians wouldn't know the difference.

PS: I bet you thought it was a Hurricane that destroyed New Orleans but it was really the current Republican administration that did it. They wouldn't allow all those folks to use the school buses to evacuate.

This year the BSC system screwed too many teams and the fans as well.
Since there are only 2 teams in the BCS title game, it is only mathematically possible to screw 2 teams.

Which two teams (only two please) do you think should have played in the title game? Of course, seeing OSU get their butt kicked makes it easier to pick someone else, but I think the BCS system did the job it was designed to do.

BTW, since only 2 teams per conference can be selected for a BCS game, and Oklahoma and Kansas played in a BCS game, and the teams share their earnings among the entire conference, then I don't think Mizzu got screwed. If Mizzu had won the Big 12 title game, they probably would have been in the BCS title game. But that is up to the rankings, and not up to the BCS per se.
