Excellent book-
I like the way he disposes of the characters
(even a cement truck in one death)
And he develops the characters so well
Addresses addictive disorders- HIV - femme Fatale - Thai thinking-
I read that book twice a few years ago and thought its one of the best books on Asia written as a Novel

It helps me as well to keep thing in perspective.
My teerak says she has uterine fibroids and needs an operation I dont believe a word of it for a minute. But they play on the fact we cannot check as we are in falangville and our decency or caring qualities. Experts they are and play farang like keith richards plays the gitaar.
This just came back 'i not think jet for monny is I six have to do what can I do if have no monny d.r dont make for me I I give big big mor '
Slowly it progreses to car, house, and all the other problems that need money until the falang thinks its normal to do. Anyway from where im standing it sure feels like its all about the money.

G'day Jingjo and thanks for passing on the very sad news about Eliot.
I was fortunate to meet Eliot several times in Thailand and Australia as he lived just up the road from me in Melbourne ("look for the guy who looks like John Denver!"). After I moved to Phuket I would go and see him at his favourite bar, Sailor Bar in Patong, whenever he was on holiday there. I think in all the time he visited Phuket he never once went to the beach! He would perch himself at the bar and put away a great number of gins and tonic.
We lost touch after I went to work in the Middle East but he was what we affectionately call a "top bloke". The news of his passing and his recent troubles is incredibly sad to hear. The last time I chatted to him he seemed happy with his Thai "missus" and things were looking good for him. Obviously not the case.
In a country that puts so much importance on the heart it is amazing how many heartless women work in the bars here.
God bless Eliot and his family. He will definitely be missed.

Once I was in a village (this is a peter and the wolf story)
It was around dusk and alot of village milling going on, my wife and I were peacefully peeling lychees and the dinner was cooking-
A loud scream went up from a house down the street - an old woman had been hurt by a fall down stairs-They took her to Hospital-
Next day a desperate woman in her 20s appeared and wanted me to tell her very angry western Boyfriend that she was on a farm infact up near Cambodia and she had left bangkok over night to attend her grand mother-
I didnt think it was a good idea - as the animals could convince him- but she pleaded and I could hear him yelling down the phone-
Turns out she had taken 3000 baht off him and he thought she had gone for a party mode with some other dude-
He wouldnt believe me or wife- (who really didnt want to try hard to convince)....i simply said f*** Man cant you hear the cows?
Then the grandmother actually died two days later -
On Top of all this shit the farang dumped her and she was innocent and distraught - (but hey thats life maybe she was a bar girl and so her stories wore thin?)
Never found out
I found it amazing that "things are not always as they appear"
Sometimes its plain Truth
Anyhow obviously if the Guy flew in to see her and she goes to Bangkok only to leave soon after and stole - her story is not holding water even if for her she was ironically telling the truth-
The funniest I saw Though was a ""Buffalo sick -"" story
The guy on the other end was laughing at this girl as if is that the best excuse you can offer me for asking for some extra cash?
Mean while the f***ing animal was being worked on by some dude for snake bite- eyes rolled back

blimey things have changed, last time I was around jingjo & DG were best mates, almost holding hands from forum to forum. One things that hasn't changed however is DG uncouthness, you just don't make comments on other people wives, that's boorish.
