I have flown china airlines and air china and i would never fly air china again. I thought that china airlines was decent. the planes were relitively new and the service was good. The airport in taipei sucks but i like that they have an evening flight out of jfk.
I am flying china airlines to bangkok in less than a week. I didn't realise their safety record was sub-par. now I am going to need some valium for the flight.

China Airlines do have domestic flight to one of Taiwan's islands.
They did clean-up their acts after last accident ( metal fatigue?), and their maintenance program is pretty good.
Seating on the airbus is smaller than Boeing, even in the first class cabin.

As Jackson says the night flight out of JFK is a big plus.
Tapei Airport is my favorite airport. They have free showers. When you've been traveling for 18 hours the shower is a godsend.
If you live in the USA, when booking put your frquent flyer miles in your Delta account.

China Airline is usually a decent deal for Chinese as it's catter to us. It does have a pretty bad record and accidents and incidents. I've heard and or read that many of the pilots are former military fighter pilots and like to fly rather recklessly. The flight is generally very packed with families, kids and elderly Chinese going home. Lots of bad Chinese hygene and habits like cutting in front of people in lines, taking off their socks in public boarding area, and stuff. And I'm a Chinese-American. Seats are generally tight.
I would try other airline if possible. Like Cathay Pacific. Cathay leaves LAX around midnight and arrives in BKK around 11 AM.

Flown China Air (the Taiwanese airline) a few times. Found it to be remarkably average all round (space for your feet, food etc.).
Of more interest though, used to drink in the same bar as the off duty pilots in Taipei....and boy can they drink. Seriously hope they have a day off the sauce before taking to the skies again
Never flown Air China tho.

During SARS did a afternooner outa LAX with aisles of seats for myself and others. Food and service are average be sure to ask for more drinks and snacks. Taipei airport international side sucks like a 1950's terminal but then many jet airports also do.
Heck they always seem to be the lowest pricewise on Expedia. If your not flyin 1st or B class they are all the same in economy. Till the flight routes and jets get roomier then a Pacific jump will get better.
Phillipine air is my favorite route; LAX HON MAN BKK 5-6 hour runs I hate bein couped up for 16 hours.
