Kryptonite
Here's my $0.02 worth on this topic.

I have been in Thailand for 4 years now. I never carry my passport, and never carry a copy.

I have been asked for my passport on several occasions by traffic police. I tell them that I do not have it. If they insist that I give it to them, I invite them to ride with me to my home to get it. That usually results in a counter offer of a bribe to save time. In which I always haggle them down to around 100 baht. Some have been persitant and I have paid as much as 500 baht bribe (he had my car keys though).

When driving, and you get stopped by the police, always shut the car off and hide the keys. They will take them and use them to bargain for a higher priced bribe. Same goes with your passport and drivers license. Never give them to the police, they are only going to use them against you. But always tell them that they can come with you to get them if they want.

I know that most of you think that what I just said is off the wall. This is my own procedure and policy when dealing with the police. I have never been jailed or taken to the police station. Use it or not, up to you handsum man

In view of current developments it would seem prudent to carry a copy of your passport around with you.
There is no way that I will be carrying the original with me.
If I happened to lose my passport it would cause big problems getting back to work and much time and expense.

I high recommend carrying your passport. I was stopped by the Immigration police just before Soi 33 on Sukhumvit in a Taxi. They wanted to see my passport since I was a foreigner. They told me all foreigners must carry passport or work permit.
Well to make things short. The guy gave me a real hard time. Then says things will go more smoothly if he I had some better I.d "that I know you have". I ended up giving him 700 Baht to let me go. He actually wanted to take me down to the station.
Evidently from what the taxi driver was telling me they are having a lot more road side checks these days, since so many people over stay their Visa.

Your chances of needing it on short notice are much greater than your chances of losing it or having it stolen, unless you're a drunk and/or a fool. Carry it. If you can't manage to keep track of one small document you need to stay the hell home.

Mr Alan
So largeload, you did, or did not, have your passport with you when you paid the 700 baht?

Actually I usually a fool when I am drunk, besides I already have to keep track of my cell phone and I can't walk and chew gum at the same time, so I carry a copy of my passport and work permit and actual Thai Driver's license.

With all the sitting on bar stools that I do I would have to replace the passport every six months due to ass wear.

Believe me the hassle and time required to get a replacement passport outweighs any short term hassle from the men in brown, who Krypto has pointed out can be easiliy pursuaded with some THB.

The more information we have the better able everyone is to make the decision that's right for them.

I don't drive or take drugs or get into fights in Thailand and I'm generally respectful of the law. So I still think the odds of getting into serious trouble with the police for not having it (i.e. worst case probably being wasting several hours getting hauled into the station) are less than the odds of losing or damaging it (for me).

Anyway, I thought griffin was German, which explains why he was stopped so frequently. Everyone knows us Americans are above the law.

For those who live in Thailand and figured the Thai's out, they will take the quickest, easiest way. Hauling your ass into the police station will take a lot of time and paperwork for the policeman. He does not want to do it and neither do you, so he uses it as a bluff negotiation tool to get more money. This takes him off of the street thus collecting less fees.

Now if you are an asshole, he will just as well haul your ass to the station to amke your life miserable, but being polite and pay your dues and you are off on your way.

I guess at least you didn't mention the war! Above the law, more like above reality.
