Most taxis waiting outside tourist places are either paying for parking or just lazy and don't want to only get the regular meter fare. They want big tourist money.

Most moving taxis will now go by the meter even for long distances like the airport for around 140 B from Sukh.

Was in bankok for a month during x-mas and new year. Had taxirides 2-5 times a day. Following a simple rule, i had no probb whatsoever with a taxiride.

Ask for meter or "topsop". If not, i just walk away and take another cab. But most times they just turned on the meter, and that was it.

Yes, the taxi taxes the haggler in you, and the skytrain, well- there's stairs to climb......For the adventurous thrillseeker may I suggest the Tuk Tuk or the moto bike taxi, I prefer these modes for the cool breezes I can grab and also the drivers ability to navigate the traffic, and the fare is oh so cheap cheap!!!!!

THD,

Yep, I like the moto-taxis, especailly those 60 kph jaunts down the sidewalk that send pedestrians scrambling! Sure gets you there in a hurry, and much cheaper than taxis (not sure what my life expectancy will be, though). The songthaews are always a great value, and in the area my TGF lives, have fixed prices (3 Baht one way to the market, for instance).

Tuk tuks are cheap cheap ? I took a tuk tuk from Pantip to Siam Square and he charged me Baht 50, besides enabling me to get a feel of what it's like to go careening down a BKK road. No more tuks for me. In comparison, cabs are a lot cheaper and more comfortable. Sky trains are the best !!

I have to admit I won't get in a tuk-tuk unless forced by a visitor...and last time it was a short trip and I walked....can't stand the bloody things.....Taxis are cheap cheap and far more comfortable....must be getting old....

Any Newbie must take the Tuk-Tuk. This is a rite of passage for the first timer Farang in Bangkok. Following the ride, trying to make sense when the driver can't or won't listen, and you find yourself five miles from the two blocks you initially wanted to travel is true sanook for the farang...............

Seriously though, I love the skytrain, love to go to lotus in the daytime, and the weekend market for cheap cheap, but I must say again, the stairs are a bitch.....I'm not that fat, but just walkin up can drench me with sweat by the time I'm on the train. Maybe I need a escalator like at the NEP, damn, I'm gettin old, listen to me..............

According to what i found on other sites regarding just taxis:
