Quote: from chickengeorge on 11:34 am on Aug. 16, 2004 Not sure about domestic but Thai International Business is the pits. Didnt even have my own tv. BA Business....still the mutz nutz.
Don't even get me started on teh failings of Thai International business class. OK, just one example..... They have a 747-400 where the business class on the lower deck has a wall down one side with a first class galley behind. Who wants to sit next to a minging wall for 14 hours??? And they will not charge less for these seats. Oh no, same as Singapore Airlines which have new planes, comfy recliners and in seat entertainment. As to BA being good I would disagree. The new flat beds are the mutt's nutts but when they upgraded the aircraft they forgot to upgrade the cabin staff.

Quote: from black cats on 8:24 am on Aug. 15, 2004 Let me throw in the contrary viewpoint. $50 for a bigger seat for a 1h20m flight? No I can think of a lot of other things to do with $50 especially in LOS.
Yes, there are many ways one can spend $50. I spend the extra $50 on airfare and fortunately my vacation budget allows that I can do such a thing without it impacting anything else I might want to do. So, if I saved the extra $50, it's not like it would have allowed me to do something extra. I would only have the extra $50 in my pocket when I went home and had a less than comfortable trip to Phuket. I'd rather spend the $50 in Thailand than in Farangland any day.
Quote: from black cats on 8:24 am on Aug. 15, 2004 1 more soapy comes to mind. I'll take that over a hot towel and a paper any day. An extra $10 a night on a hotel room for 5 nights will get you a better room that you'll enjoy longer. The list goes on.
I usually already stay at 5 star hotels (which I'll get flamed over just like buying business class to Phuket), I'm just upgrading my transportation.
Quote: from black cats on 8:24 am on Aug. 15, 2004 It seems ironic to me how people stress over their flights more than their accomodations which is where your comfort really counts. I know I'm anlaysing this to death and I'm a cheapskate, no need to tell me that in a post. This is just MHO, I'm not knocking other people for their opinions. If it makes you happy do it.
No one in this thread has stressed flights over accomodations. Thai Air has also placed orders for a few of the same planes that Singapore Airlines has. The new long haul planes that are making that crazy 18.5 hour non-stop trip between NY and Singapore. I look forward to the day when I can fly direct NY to BKK.

Only a week to go.... I think I'll spring for the extra $100 for two Biz class seats, it will have zero impact on my budget anyway. Thanks for the info!

G 240, Congratulations on being so rich! Watching the value of my nest egg grow has sort of affected my life. I would like to retire one day, meaning I will not need to work. For most Westerners this is an elusive goal since we cannot do without pampering for the shortest periods of times in the most trivial of situations. Live long and pauper is the creedo of the 21st century. How sad. But like I said, this is subjective and by no means a condemantion of people who feel differently. Enjoy! BC

Far from rich... It's called managing what money I do have. All year I put money aside to go to Thailand, sacrificing some of the frivolous things in farangland for the pleasures in Thailand. I can do this at the same time I put money away for retirement like you. At the same time I have a general understanding that I may not live forever to gain the maximum benefit of my retirement fund. I would be damn pissed if I made it to my grave with a bank account full of money and having flown economy class and stayed in budget hotels all my life.

The whole point for me in using business class on Thai's Phuket run is that with this fare you care can easily chage dates to suit your convience. I certainly don't do it for the grub. Also, I guess you get to cool your heels in the airport VIP lounge at both ends, and can pack more luggage on board hassle free.

I know about that damn wall, was stuck next to it once. Useless. Also agree about the BA crew although to be honest I dont have much to do with the crew...upper deck,...bed out....catch zzzzzzzzzzzz. Qantas really were bad too, being about the 1st airline with business class they finally upgraded their terrible seating offerings. The qantas seatbeds are an improvement but it baffles me why they spent a fortune on these things (in seat massager etc) and NOt make em FLAT.....doh.... .they havnt upgraded their food tho... the damn lamb stew which they serve in every cabin...just bigger portions in Business/First. yuk

Gator, Fair enough, I think we just disagree about whether it's worth it. For me, it's not a matter of giving anything else up. But when I look at what $50 does buy in Thailand, a bigger seat just isn't worth $50, to me. Now if you're talking $150 extra on an international flight that's 10+ hours, that's definetly worth it. Old timer presents some good reasons below for paying extra. Especially the flexibility on dates. For someone who lives in BKK that's good insurance. The luggage weight is helpful too. I'm pleased to be getting a bargain on Air Asia but the weight restriction is one of those trade offs. On hotels, it's a happy medium for me. There are plenty of hotels at or above US standards for $30 or less in Thailand. I say soak it up and save. Once your room exceeds a certain size you're only paying for prestige. I don't need a room so big I have to drive to the bathroom. On the other hand, you can waste 900 baht trying to save 100 by going with a cheaper hotel. I tried the hotel above the Thermae (can't recall the name) and it was a complete waste of money. Went to Dynasty the next day. What a difference that 90 baht extra made.

Some thoughts.... (1) You dont get much for US$50 but then US$50 aint much. Easier check in, earlier exit off the plane, a bigger seat, earlier luggage removal. Whether its value or not depends on how much money you have in the first place. (2) The business lounges at Phuket domestic and Bangkok domestic are pretty pathetic. A free banana and a cup of coffee. (3) Pay the extra when wait listed can be worthwhile. Wait lists down to Phuket can be a pain and the business class wait lists are usually much shorter. (4) You can change times of flights (with no penalties) on both business class and economy class. If you miss your flight - no penalties either class.
