I used to dress comfortably on flights - baggy pants etc. I used to get grilled by customs why I traveled so much and to Colombia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and what I did for a living. Now I dress like I'm at work - polo/chinos. I seem to get questioned less. BTW dressing as casually as possible is probably a good idea for going to Brazil, since customs there was grilling me about whether I was coming to do work under a tourist visa. Flying back from BKK on New Years day all the Dallas custom officer had to say to me was express sympathy for the people in Thailand after the tsunami.

In hnl I always get checked by customs, I guess I fit a drug runners profile. My question is why dont they use the drug sniffing dogs, much faster and I think they do better job...lol. P.S. I am not into drug smuggling.

Why don't you lot do your smuggling into Britain? I have never been stopped when entering the UK and the customs officers do not seem that interested in stopping others. Maybe I have been lucky or the UK has a low profile policy. It seems that US customs are 'busier' than their european counterparts. I have never even thought about trying to hide fake DVD's or excess duty items...it does not seem worth the effort if the chances of being stopped are so slim. I think I would be very embarrassed if a Customs Officer uncovered my feeble attempts to deceive him - much better to come clean & let them take the 'goods' off you if they so wish. Although, yet again, the friends of mine who have had luggage searched in the UK have never had fake stuff taken from them. It seems that UK customs are not interested in personal use excess or fakes..a suitcase full of DVD's or watches may be different though.

I like to go through customs still in my pajamas, and slippers. Seriously though, after spending 2 weeks of heavy parting, and a 17hr flight back, I look like shit dressed in jeans, shirt, and my slippers. I look more like if they don't get done with me fast, I'll pass out, or die on them.....even had one on one trip back that changed my declaration form so I wouldn't have to wait, and pay duty on the extra booze I brought back.......555

Quote: from ccvvbb on 12:01 pm on Jan. 13, 2005 There is no physical "profile" that will single you out for a customs search. If you are a (younger) male traveling from SEA (alone is the worst) into North America you are a potential drug smuggler. It does not matter how you are dressed, or if you need a shave or haircut. This came directly from the mouth of a couple of customs agents a few years ago.
By law, the US customs agents cannot discriminate based on racial, ethnic, etc profiling. So the official US policy is always to deny that any profiling exists. But human nature and experience still exists, and the customs agents will use their intuition within the very short time they have to decide whether to search you. The bottom line is what you look like can affect this decision.

Quote: from LastSurvivor on 1:33 pm on Jan. 13, 2005 Has anyone had customs check or confiscate DVD's or software when returning to the U.S.? I always carry a little CD book which is empty on the flight over and fill it up with movies and software titles on the way back. Sometimes I actually just store the software on the laptop or install it while in Thailand. I DO NOT carry those incriminating little plastic sleeves which scream "I'm not legal" on the plane with me. Well, I did that once or twice but not anymore. Since I have my laptop with me I "hope" they just assume I'm returning with movies I've purchased or own to watch on the trip. Any thoughts. Never been hassled at customs but I think this might just be because the Atlanta airport is always busting at the seams and the odds are low they even see you to single out.
Generally, US customs is looking for drugs, money over $10,000, amounts over the $800 duty exemption ($100 for non-US residents), or commercial quantities of counterfeit trademarked items. They are not usually concerned with small quantities of items with counterfeit trademarks, since it is actually legal to bring in one counterfeit item of each type (one fake watch, one fake handbag, etc.). Obviously, your method of removing the packaging from CD’s and DVD’s is a good one and should be used just in case they do a random check.

I also always get checked when I am going through Honolulu. When I am coming back from Europe, I have never been checked. Don't know why because Hawaii is not a hotspot for drug smuggling or anything.
