"Bangsaen" (as spelled on highway directional signs) is a great little, largely overlooked local beach resort, more accessible to BKK than Pattaya. A college town, and more of a family-oriented resort community for Thai families. Maybe what Pattaya was before the hordes of American servicemen reduced it to pubic ash on their R&Rs. Bangsaen does host a small community of Scandinavian retirees, wanting a more local living experience with proximity to great golf courses.
This is not a place for Pattaya-esque night life. There is however, a worthwhile local rub & scrub there - Galaxie Massage, located at the intersection of the main highway from Bangkok and the main turnoff to the Bangsaen "CBD" (everyone knows it). Some respectable talent; little to no English. Moderate pricing.
Best accommodation is the local 5-star Tide Inn (done quite well, every bit the equal to a very good 4+ star international) just across the beach road from the gulf(www.thetide-inn.com). Owned by the daughter of Kamnan Po, the last of the notorious old school Thai mafia godfathers, now in hiding for murder (colorful stuff; the hotel is great). Fully priced rack rates are maybe THB 3,500-4,500. Far more modest accomodations geared for Thai families are everywhere.
This is best a venue for a laid back weekend holiday - two days. Sunbathing, napping, reading, dining, strolling, recovering. Maybe bring your own travelling talent. Two or three glorious seafood restaurants. If you like anonymity, you will be amongst a very few farang there.
If you live in Thailand, worthwhile - I would not invest precious days there if I were on a Thai holiday.

Thanks for that.....any idea what a taxi ride from BKK costs/duration???
my trip in April is unfortunatly shorter than I would like and I dont think I will make it to Ko Chang (my fav) or even Ko Samed 
I am not really a Pattaya guy but was thinking 2 days in Jomtien for R&R and a songtoa into Pattaya for dinner and enjoyment...but having never been to Bangsean will do some snooping and that just might be my beach excursion on this trip..
