I fly China Airlines (taiwanese) to Bkk from Amsterdam all the time. Pay £465 including flights from the u.k. with KLM which is great because they fly from all the local airports. Sign up for the Dynasty Flyer programe and get 11, 000 air miles for each round trip. You only need 15, 000 air miles for an upgrade. So each round trip you are getting £100 worth of Air Miles. The planes they fly on this route are 747-400 so are fairly new, service is o.k. but there not keen on letting people get to much to drink. I have known them close the bar in an entire section just because one guy was getting a bit loud. Overall though not bad, plus I use a preferred agent agent in the u.k. and they can always get you seats even when flights are full. Have also flown China Air from BKK to Gaungzhou, not the most pleasant experience - next time I'll take Thai flight.

I flew LAX to BKK on China 2 years ago and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The service was good, the seats were comfy, and they had some of the cutest flight attendants I've ever seen. They also had the best price at the time.

Forgot to add in pevious post. I used this route last month. My flight from Manchester to Amsterdam was with KLM. KLM had just introduced a policy of charging for ANY excess baggage. I was on a 2 week trip so my case was heavy. I was asked for 350 GBP EXTRA. I had to pull out of line and stuff 8KG of stuff on to my person. Then I put the extra stuff into my carry on baggage after check in.

Rhetorical question: Do you think that extra 8KG of weight would have consumed 350 GBP in fuel over the whole trip? Airlines have turned into a real bunch of bastards anymore.

VJ No way would the 8 Kg have used that much fuel. That sort of trick by KLM just pisses me off. I suppose is is a reaction to competitive forces, getting more money any which way they can. I am only about 90 KG, 200 pounds, and I get more pissed off when I have to pay the same as a 300 pounder.

About loading up your carry-on.....out of Vancouver to Manilla last year, I was also loaded up over-weight....and they weighed my carry on bag!!! Ended up stuffing my pockets which were below the sightline of check-in staff at the counter. Some departure check-ins are catching on....

I flew China Air on my last trip and had no problems. I would have to agree with whoever mentioned that the Taipei airport sucks, as it really does. It's beyond drab, especially the time of night you're likely to be visiting it -- it makes the Cleveland's airport look like Disneyland. However, I'd fly it again for that price, in a second.

On a different flightpath and a different airline: the best long-distance flight I ever had was with Tarom (Romainian Airlines), from BKK to Bucharest, ten years ago. It was great because they let me sleep on the floor. With that kind of service, you can keep your good food (!) and your cute attendants. And it was cheap. I'd do it again.

Sorry never flown with China Airway’s as they hold the world record for “more take-offs than safe landings” But it has to be said that all cheep airlines have to find extra money someway, charging for excess is one-way, cramming in more seats, & charging for trolley services is another On the subject of excess baggage, I have a work colleague who has just jetted off to the Maldives for Xmas with Air SriLankan, he was taking a lot of his Scuba gear so he was worried about his baggage allowance. As I now always fly Emirates to LOS (departing from my local provincial airport “BHX” twice a day from next March so I can get an evening flight for that extra day (night) in LOS) and as Emirates are partners with SriLankan in the Skywards air miles reward card scheme I informed him that with Emirates if you hold a Skywards card you can claim an extra 10Kg baggage allowance for sports gear (which includes Scuba gear). Got him to sign up for “Skywards” on line, we cold not find any info on sports gear on the SriLankan web site so he phoned up his travel agent who advised him that he was only allowed 20Kg per person, I advised him to phone SriLanken direct and see what they say, and so he did, he was told that the ticket say’s 20Kg but he was really allowed 30Kg, so worth checking direct with your airline.
