True. Nevertheless, the term - JATO (Jet Assisted Take-Off) has always been used, in spite of the fact that rockets were the ones doing the "assisting." And it's not anything new either. The first recorded use of JATO was in 1929, August 1st. The Germans strapped solid propellant rockets on a Junkers-33 seaplane.

I can assure you that the acronym RATO is used in the UK (when appropriate--Hawker Hurricanes were launched using a form of RATO from merchant ships in the Atlantic to provide air cover during WWII). And I believe you're right--the Germans experimented with things like this before the war. The term RATO is also used at http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/research/bombers/b4/b4-58.htm This is the site of the USAF Museum, which (as it states) is the Official National Museum of the United States Air Force. So the Brits and the USAF use the term. Perhaps we're the only ones

Interesting reading. I'm always fascinated with aviation history. Perhaps the only thing that surprises me more is thread creep - we went from Northwest Airlines to JATO/RATO in a blink of an eye. ps: Thanks for that link!
