Ok, Larry has his ticket now, but anyone else may still benefit from my experience.
One year ago I got a cheap ticket from FIN AIR 625 euro all inclusive. (That beats 600 pounds anyday).
The only problem was that I had to fly via Helsinki (from Amsterdam). So you sit 3 hours longer in a plane and you need to transfer to a different plane in Helsinki. But you can make this problem to your advantage. 
The month before I left, the Amsterdam customs were very keen on fake and illegal goods from thailand. They checked everybody! And I mean everybody! If you had 1 T-shirt it was taken from you and you got a fine on top of that. DVD's and rolex's meant life inprisonment. 
So I did not buy anything. But as I flew in from Helsinki customs did not even bother to turn up at the gate. I was on a low risk flight. And my passport was allready checked in Helsinki where I entered Europe. So I could have smuggled 20kg of coke, be a famous terrorrist and gotten away with it. I don't know how picky customs are in the UK and if you are interested in cheap fake stuff, but if you are, you can consider this route. In Helsinki they could not care less, because you are on transit anyway. If you are a EU member that is. The thai girl next to me had a lot of difficulty getting thru. (She was the other reason I did not mind the detour. It was a short extension to my vacation, sort of.)

Just a note to bestmate. I tried Eva. Honestly couldn't get the sort of price (430 ish inc tax) your talking about.
Right now a lot of the prices have gone mad. Don't really know why. Apart from it being high season, it's never been this expensive before though!
The stopover is a bit of a pain in the arse. but its just an hour and a half out. A bit more on the way back. Who cares about coming back.
Whichever way, I will be sipping a Chang on soi 4 round about 8 on the 30th. If anyoneones around, might see you there.

The same thing is possible via dusseldorf with thai airways. last april I arrived back at schipol with china and there was no customs (too busy with the south american flights) but cause I have a wife and kid and much baggage they never seem to bother us, I noticed they like to pick out single people more so early in the morning.
Tickets are going up now but like I said I booked months ago for april 585 euro all in direct ams -bkk so its possible
