moke, I didn't realize that one could pay their USA federal income tax by credit card without also paying the credit card processing fee of around 3%. AFAIK, congress/IRS agreed that taxes could be paid by credit card, BUT they didn't allocate funds to pay the credit card processing fee. Any further information?

R.I.T., American Express Travel Centers allow you to use your card to purchase travelers checks. This is based on your allowable cash advance on the card. However, it is not treated as a cash advance but a purchase thus earning miles. This is how I get around paying property tax and other bills that do not accept AMEX. I purchase a travellers check and deposit it into my bank account. I then pay it off every month but earn miles for things I normally would not. You can also purchase presidential coins at the US mint using your credit card. I just purchased $500 one dollar coins with free shipping that I will use to pay some bills and get the rewards by using the card. Again, all of this is discussed in depth at the above mentioned website. LS

LS, Thanks for the info. Never thought about doing those things. I'll check out the website mentioned. BTW, I'll second using EVA Evergreen Deluxe Class. Wish I had learned about them before. I've used them for the last 3 trips to LOS. Even with only Silver Card status that gets me into the FF club at SFO. Lots of free drinks, munchies and Free Internet. And, the chairs are much nicer than at the gate. For about $300 more RT compared to Economy it is a real deal. Question: can you book Evergreen Deluxe from any website other than EVA's??

retiredintahoe - the processing fee for paying your quarterly estimated fed. income taxes is $74.70*4 = #298.80. A deal seeing as you are getting a round trip, business class ticket on thai international from lax - bkk - lax for $45.00. the same ticket on EVA runs around $3,600.00. if you do not have enough miles, an upgrade to deluxe coach will get you a decent sized seat! cheers.......... moke

Same here. Northwest Worldperks VISA and Delta AMEX card. (wonder if they will keep both going after the merger is complete?) Pay for everything with the cards and use the miles to fly to BKK. I find that NW flights to/from BKK normally open up about 5-6 weeks before departure. Thanks for the info on the rental car promotions, and I will have to look into buying AMEX traveler checks.

moke, Thanks. Of course, it depends on your taxable income and how good you are in (legally) avoiding taxes. And, no state income tax. I already do pay my property tax via credit card, as my state pays the processing fee (figuring more people will pay if given more options). You are right, EVA business is about $3,600 RT. And, I do use EVA Evergreen Deluxe.

Delta Airlines. Here is the link to the discussion on flyertalk. The promotion ends Nov 15, 2008. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=861953 So far I've done 3 rentals from Avis at 5k each for $100 total, 2 with Avis for 9,999k each for $95 and another 3 with Budget and the new promotion at 7550 each for $100. Not bad. PM me if you have any quesitons. LS

since we are all getting creative, you could overpay your quarterly estimated federal & state income taxes and get it back when you file. I know the feds penalize you if you underpay, but since they live on the short term interest from the money they collect during the year, I doubt they would care if you overpay. look at it as a forced savings account with free travel to bkk as your reward! cheers................. moke
