I can only guess a LARGE part of the hurry is from Aussie travellers,, most flights to LOS from Aus arrive around 11pm,, must hurry if check in / shower/ collect little stuffed kangaroos/koalas and hit good places in time to find RELIEF from 6-12 months of no LOS.

My flight from Aus normaly arrives 10.40 pm and by the time I leave the airport, check in and shower, I would say I`m out and about by 12.00 midnight, plenty of time to hit Soi Cowboy ect.
btw I get my cab from up stairs at departure, never had a problem !

I get my cab from the normal queue and usually have a minimal wait. I give the driver enough baht to cover the tolls and am in town inside of 20 minutes.
It is the wait on Suk to get from the highway to the hotel that kills it. Last trip was 40 min from freeway to Landmark and this was with a shortcut through the hospital (most of the wait was on Soi 4).
For reference: I usually arrive about 1330....

Maybe Im going to jinx myself by writing this, but I've never had a significant delay due to traffic in BKK, but then I usually plan so I'm heading to-from Don Muang at off hours. I'd rather sit in the TG or NWA lounge than in traffic.
The delay for me has usually come at immigration or baggage clearance. Fastest time so far is 40 minutes between de-planing and arrival at the Landmark, but Ive gotten to the airport from the Landmark in about 20.

One taxi (morning) ride took me past the Suk junction and down a little sliproad some way further on. This turned back on itself and then, after a left through some kind of market/school area, let out onto Nana Sua to drop me at the Nana Car Park in good time. I'm not sure if it's avaialble at all time of day though.

That day there was a policeman directing all the traffic to the slip road going by the hospital...

ttyfon is referring to entering the south end of soi 4 through the Thai Tabacco Monopoly. Only open at certain times of the day. Closes at 6:30 pm most days, though some days the guys leave it open.
Not sure what Nana Sua is, Soi 3 is Nana Nua and soi 4 is Nana Thai

I was 3 days in Hong Kong and returned later in the evening. The Tobacco Monopoly was closed so we went through the J W Marriot and Rajah carparks instead. A bit slower but far quicker than taking the Sukhumvit off ramp.
