Hello everyone. I have another problem that I need help with. Ok, I am all set to go on my trip to Thailand. I think I am, anyways..... I leave March 11 from USA... and leave thailand April 11. I know that a visa is not required for a tourist if they are not staying longer than 30 days, but my problem is this. I was checking my itenerary and I saw that I am OVERSTAYING my 30 days by about 6 hours, which makes it go into 31 days. I did not take note to this while I reserved my tickets. Anyways, I want to know if it is possible to get off in bangkok, and "hang around" the terminal for like an hour and a half... then it will be 1 am, the next day... then I can go about my way signing in and all that stuff.....and I wont have to worry about a thing, cause it will be 30 days exactly. Or will the thai embassy just see it as a couple of hours, and just let me slide? Or will they see this in america, and not even let me board the plane to go into thailand? I have never flown out of the country before, so im not familiar with this visa thing. I will arrive in bangkok at 11:30 pm on march 12th. I will leave April 11th at 7 AM. I know I can get a visa if I hurry up and pay the absurd fees, but if there is a way I can get around this I can save time, hassle and more than a hundred bucks! But getting to thailand safe and with no worries is my first priority. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I check the site many times a day. Thank you all in advance!

My flight arrived at 11:30PM. I was standing in front of the immagration guy around 12:05 and my passport was stamped the day before. I had a 60 day visa and I was not staying the full 60 so it didn't matter.

I would wait untill 1 AM to go thru and ask what date will be stamped in your passport. If you overstay your visa it's a 200 bhat fine. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with a 6 hour overstay. You also can go to immigration in BKK or Pattaya and get a 5 or 7 day extension with no hassle.

They will not check for your visa in the US.

Unless something has changed in the last two months, there is a longstanding, one-day visa overstay grace period: no charge if you leave the country within 24 hours after your visa's expired. Even if they now charge you for the first day you're over, it's only gonna be 200 baht and a five minute form-processing proceedure. You have no worries.

I remember I saw a sign in custom when I leave bkk, which states, over stay 31 day is free and there is a schedule of how much fine over that. At worse, you will just have to pay a fine. BigD is right, you will not have a problem reentry to US.

The authorities stopped machine-gunning overstayers several years ago.

You now merely have to pay a fine of 200 baht per day of overstay.

Just go, have a good time and pay your 200 baht when you leave. Quit worrying about it.

While for DJB there shouldn't be a problem, a reminder that overstaying and paying 200 baht a day is not a wise option.

The big problem is if, in the period you overstay you have an unexpected encounter with the police e.g. a routine passport check, a nightclub raid etc. If you have overstayed and are picked up before you get to the airport etc. you will not be given the option of paying a fine. You will not pass go, you will go directly to jail. Okay, the chances of being picked up are not great but why risk it. Just get the correct visa in the first place.

As l said, for DJB it's unlikely to be a problem but for anyone thinking they can overstay by days and weeks at a time, you need to be aware of the risk you are taking. People will say they've done it many times but it only takes one chance encounter with the police to end up in a Thai jail. All reports l've seen indicate this is not a situation you can easily (if at all) buy your way out of either.

Yes, FuturePark is right......

Even in DJBs case I would advice to hang around in the arrival lounge for a couple of days before you get through immigration.

You'll never know when paranoia starts to set in....

Overstay fines are:

24 hours = No fine.
48 hours = 400 Bht
Then 200 Bht each extra day.

Future Park is right: one's best interests are served by staying on the right side of the law. The Thais have a saying that there are only two sorts of people in jail -- stupid people and poor people.

There are two ways Thai immigration determines your stamp-in date. One is by the time and date you present yourself for entry, the other is the scheduled arrival time of your flight. Which one you get depends on blind luck.

One way to avoid the 30-day problem is to become a citizen of one of the 5 countries that get 60-day VOAs. If you can name them without looking them up, you get full marks.
