My recent expenditure on the departure tax when leaving Thailand felt like I was having to pay a barfine to let myself out of the country. I guess I won't consider it a successful trip until I have someone paying for me to leave...

You probably won't have to pay the 500 baht airport tax if you were deported by the Thai authorities. However, it may affect your chances of returning to the LOS legally in the near future.

In a lot of countries, airport tax is already included in the price of your air ticket. Not so in Thailand. Don't see it as a bar fine or departure tax .. it's just a way to pay for making use of the airport ...

Dr Love, how do you explain that many air tickets are sold with airport taxes included ? Who is wrong in such case, the air company, the travel agency or the thai custom ?!?!

I don't quite catch your drift .... Tickets in Thailand are not sold including airport taxes. If you do your homework well all passengers should know that airport tax of THB 500 will be applied. If the travel agency told you it's included you should receive a airport tax coupon which you can use while leaving. You don't have to pay again if you have a coupon ... If you bought a return ticket to Bangkok for example in Europe then the tax is only included for the airport where you departing from and taxes have to be paid in Thailand. If you book a ticket within Europe then the airport tax is usually included for the departing airport as well for the airport you're returning from. This is all transparent ...

Sorry I should have been more clear... When you buy a round ticket to thailand from abroad, 99% of the cases is airport taxes included. And it is written on your ticket anyway. My travel agent got for me a refund once from Star Alliance (which includes Thai Airways BTW). Because it is not such a big matter anyway, I prefer not to pay the thai airport taxes with the ticket and pay it as anyone else in BKK airport...
