Took the night train from Udon Thani to Bangkok, 1st Class Sleeper Car for 1277 one-way.
2nd Class Tickets were 800-900 baht (sleeper car).
Decent bed and ride, w/ car service available (food).
Negatives:
Thai Style Toilet (squat to take a shit)
12 Hour Trip
Bumpy. I can sleep thru anything, so no problems
for me)
Trains departs Udon Thani at 1920 and arrives in Bangkok around 0730 (Main Terminal).
Taking the train back tomorrow, 2nd Class Tickets.
Expect it won't be much different than 1st Class, at least I hope not!

Well, of course the biggest difference is the privacy. 2 people in a compartment instead of 48 (or so).

Purchased both beds, myself and TGF.
It was wierd that the top bed cost 1277 and the bottom bed cost close to 200 baht cheaper. Didn't see the big difference.
There was a lone traveller that had the compartment infront of us, they just stowed the top bed and he had the compartment all to himself.

Normally (in the second class) the upper berth is cheaper than the lower berth.
That' s because it's more convenient to have a lower berth and the ventilation in the lower berth is better.

The doc is right, 2nd class is not in a private compartment like 1st class (boom-boom express), so it is unlikely you'll be doing any f***ing in 2nd class. As you know, TGs are shy and do not like to have sex in the same room as 46 other people!
Glad you can sleep through anything, I'm sure one of the 46 other people will be snoring. 
You don't have to go all the way to Hualampong (main terminal). About 15-20 minutes before that, you will stop at Bang Su junction. You can get off there and get a taxi to your hotel, or you can jump on the subway (1 minute walk from Bang Su railway station). If your girlfriend is named Su, then you can get off at Bang Su then go bang Su !

I've always wanted to do this train trip as opposed to flying just for the adventure, and have wondered about getting a 1st class sleeper and going for a walk through the train and see if there was any nice ladies who would rather travel 1st class (so to speak) than sit in 2nd class. I gather the train is fairly full and surely there would one single girl looking for a bit of fun on it.
