Funny, I eat all sorts of stuff in Thailand, and I never get sick. Only once, and that was from Cabbages and Condoms restaurant (though I ate there a year later and was fine).

I do wash the foods we buy at the food carts in tap water in our apartment. In fact, my TGF always soaks the vegies and fruits in tap water to clean it. You can smell the chlorine in it. You'd be surprised how much dirt and crud comes off the fruits and vegetables from the street. I've never been sick from food she's prepared, nor from food we've bought at food carts. This is in BKK, btw.

In fact, I've also never gotten sick from eating at my TGF's home upcountry, and that's pretty rudimentary stuff up there -- we eat on floor mats with our hands the stuff prepared by the local ladies. Maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe my intestinal bugs are getting used to the local ones?

I don't drink the tap water, though I use it to wet my tootbhbrush when brushing. I figure the toothpaste will kill whatever is on the brush.

I have been to Pattaya many times and last time was the only time I got really sick, I blame it on the aphrodisiac (raw oysters) my TGF feed me the night before in one of the better fish restaurants in Pattaya, I only had a few just to please and the next day ended up with me discharging rather profusely from both ends of my digestive system.

I went to bed to try to sleep it off, but ended up with TGF nagging me to see doctor, this went on for many hours until about 9pm when I agreed that I should, she called reception who advised the best clinic and summonsed transport to take me there.

I think the clinic that was recommended was closed so I ended up at Banglamung Clinic on South Pattaya Road, there was only the doctor, nurse & receptionist present so I was seen promptly.

After the receptionist took my name & hotel details the nurse took my blood pressure the doctor summonsed me to his consulting room, examined me, took a blood sample for test and concluded that I had gastroenteritis then wrote out a prescription for four lots of tablets, the tablets were dispensed by the receptionist into small bags with instructions for taking in Thai & English, total cost for nurse, doctor, blood test & tablets, 600 Baht,
went back the next day for result of blood test, also had a fever, cost 150 baht for nurse, doctor & more tablets.

It took a few days to recover while TGF lovingly playing nurse, later on that week I meet a friend who is a permanent resident in Thailand, I explained why I had not been around for a few days and he commented that gastroenteritis can be common with tourists and the danger is that if not treated can lead to server dehydration and kidney failure, if the kidneys fail they do not recover so a life time of dialysis unless you are lucky enough to get a transplant would be expected which does happen quite frequently in LOS.

My recommendation is if in doubt consult a doctor; basic treatment is very inexpensive in Thailand, for anybody who wants Banglamung Clinic details they are:
37/43-44 M. South Pattaya Road. TEL: (038) 723270, from junction of Pattaya 3rd Road travel towards Pattaya 2nd Road for 200m, on the left, I think they are open 24/7, but not certain.

Further more it is important that all should have medical/travel insurance, in this instance it certainly was not worth claiming but had the situation been a lot worse and I needed hospital treatment then that could have run to tens of thousands of baths per day.

If I needed medical repatriation then this could run in to many million baths, further more if you do not have the means to guarantee payment then the treatment needed may not be available.

To sum up as I said in over 20 trips to Thailand I have really only got sick once where as when I used to go on European holidays I would expect to get hit every trip, so I really believe that Thailand is OK as long as you are sensible.

As I said Ballbustin (i dont follow now that advice, I gave)
Like you "up north" I ate same same, and "never get sick anymore"....after a while you turn Thai guts.

But I did wash hands alot. (big usa is giving very good advice) as handrails and surfaces are teeming with that shit.

I avoid ice (as the water source is often bad)

The poor oyster eater guy, is to be thanked for contributing his tip.

Mercury levels in fish farms, and Pattaya seafood can be high, but if your a visitor is cool.

A really big danger is squid.
My girlfriend told me they bleech it often so in trannsportation it appears fresher for sale.
She watched them do it.

Strawberries contain alot of insecticide that needs to be washed off.

Basically the health standards are bad.
Human shit traces were found in 27% of imported grown "south east asian " vegetables exported to Australia.
Meaning the sewer pipes were often channelled to fertilize soils in some rural areas where rainfalls were down.

But the good news is that the human body is very resourceful, and you do get very good at resisting minor bacterias.
Just wait til the little string goes around the wrist and your lead into 12 different aunties kitchens for a feed over a week.

Just dont ask what it is, eat it quick, and nuke it with three shots of "thai white whiskey" That incidentally can start a motor bike so is octane.
Nothing can survive that stuff.

I never drink it, but when in doubt after a meal, nuke your guts on that stuff, and it will tear up any little colli -bacteria and the liver same time.

DG,

Agreed, I do keep my hands clean too. Seems to help.

BTW, I read some reports about the dodgy water being supplied to Pattaya this year. Perhaps this is a contributing factor.

When I was in the US Army part of my job was inspecting ice plants for cleanliness. I walked into a ice making plant in Pattaya a few years ago. They were pumping water into the machine straight from the tap and they had no filtration units. Later that day I saw the companies trucks delivering ice to soi 8.

When I drink whiskey and bottled water with ice, I drink it quickly so the ice doesn't melt.

sorry to hear that lbm. have you tried sticking only to western food? although it is boring, better than to be sick.
I personally think you might have a higher risk of getting sick on western food rather than Thai. Also, it is certainly possible that restaurant food has a higher risk than food carts - reason being that what you are eating from the food carts is usually fresh that day. Restaurants, this is not necessarily so.

Everyone's digestive system is different, some people get sick easier.

I am half agreed.

But co-operation fast food like Maccas and KFC
are under "much stricter standards" than say Crazy daves spagettii of the back sois.

I eat at a great Thai resturant on temple side of soi 16 5 doors up fro gold store, after markets opposite.
Amazing Thai food, and clean.
The carts are a lucky dip.
They dont always off load the stewy bits and replace them.
Thais as all of us can see sell chickens in the midday sun at markets, often its got nothing to do with where they end up, or whose pot. Pork thats been flied over for hours, sometimes under cooked is a good vomit inducement to encounter.
But as pointed out sensitive palates just cant win.
I have eaten at a feast north where I ate same as many who got ill.
But the chillis and Chang ran it through my system so quickly, and the odd scotch chaser might have spared me the bacteria that got them.
Western cheap dives do I agree spell ( heat it up tommorrow tik and scrap of the green bits more)
Bon appettite all!

I have gotten a little sick but not much really and I was eating at the food carts/bugs and you name it.

However in Cambodia I ate at a tourist western place and was sick as hell for two days. At points it was Err well comming out of both ends at the same time. Cost for the shitty meal no pun intended $4

After I recovered I ate at a very local food stall for 75 cents and had no problem.

I think the turnover of the food in the tourist place I was at was not high enough so less fresh. The food stall the food turnover was higher and it was cooked to order and well cooked.
