Thaid Up,
Ahhh no, did not die on the shitter, only thought I would or at least during the severe cramps. I wanted to get as many responses as possible before commenting. Now is couple of days after sickness and back to 90 % I guess. It just saps all the energy out of you. Am leaving tomorrow morning so hope I don't get a relapse. Just a brief story here. Year before last, I was stayng at the Pattaya Center hotel and got food poisoning (not at the hotel), and call front desk to have them go to pharmacy to pick up anything that would help. The General Manager's wife was concerned and she came up and actually stayed for several hours in the room, mopping my brow, giving orders to restaurant to send up a type of hot rice soup, and encouraged me to take some in although it came right back up. She was genuinely concerned and I really helped me that year. I never forgot that and stop in with a gift for her each trip.

God damn, if I avoid chicken, pork, salid (Sp.?), dairy products, ie. cheese, etc., ice, and swapping spit with TGs, it sure puts a damper on my visit. Interesting to note is that I stay in bangkok just slightlty less than Pattaya during my holiday and have never been sick there. Talked to an English couple this morning at the Lek Hotel and both have been sick this year and nearly as much as me the last few years. They are going to try and change from Pattaya to another resort, but more because they say that after coming here for 15 years, they think it is no longer as fun as it used to be, but I guess that is a whole nother thread. Have to admit, the sickness not withstanding, this is the first year I have be READY to go home. Incidently, they heard that if you eat yogurt daily a few weeks prior to coming to Pattaya, you can avoid food poisning. Anybody ever heard of this?

So many good comments and advice, so I will try and comment on each with comments or questions. Dirty, I think your comments were especially relevant, but not sure about the whiskey trick.

Why are chilis in food considered a threat to causing food poisoning?

Seems eliminating chicken, pork, and seafood just about eliminates all Thai food. Hard to do in Thailand. Love the food, but with reduced spicyness.

Same Thai doctor said to take one tablespoon of pepto bismo each morning and it will coat your stomach and gut and help prevent bacteria from causing diarhea. Turns shit black but definately did work. It kept this part of the illness to a minimum compared to past food poisonings.

I do travel with Cipro and have it this trip. Took one, threw it up, took another threw it up, tried another it stayed. Some stayed, some did not, could not get complete regimen in because during that 36 hours I was sleeping most of the time.

BigDusa,
Thought your comments were good. So hard to find regular places to wash hands though, and need hot water to really get the oils, etc. off. I do now increase my washings, just as I do in the states during flu season. Your comments on the ice in Pattaya worried the hell out of me. I thought all ice in Pattaya that had holes in it used "purified" water. To not used ice in Thailand is indeed very discouraging as hot and humid as it is. I drink alot of soda waters with lime and with ice, but may skip the ice next trip. Same same, ice with hole in it in mexico is supposed to be safe but if go in restaurant where you see them using an ice pick break up ice from a block, then probably is trouble.

Just general comment, that I know also that ordering a salid just washed in tap water or getting glass that is still wet with tap water is almost a sure way to get sick. Love the salid bar at Pizza Hut or its competitor or the Sizzler, so not sure I can give up these.

Just a general comment again on the dodgy water in Pattaya, and unqualified at best. From so many trips to mexico, I know there problem is sewage mixing with drinking water. Too many people, to many bad sewage and water lines. Smelling the raw sewage on 2nd road and down on Beach Road, I can only imagine, Pattaya cannot escape this problem either.

And yes, the severe dehydrating that can result from food poisoning can cause liver damage if action is not taken. I know this and have those little orange tasting packets of powder that I empty in to a bottle of water and drink.

Sorry my comments are so random. Thanks to all who gave advice and made comments. I leave tomorrow morning and only hope my digestive system holds up. Traveling with food poisoning is pure misery.

Well glad you are OK, nothing worse than being sick while on vacation, that is best left while home at work.

Anyhow do you have any suspect to the cause? Which food?

I thought the same about the ice with the holes, in fact I have been told by CG that cooling a hole with ice prior to f***ing is a good thing.

But seeing the way Thai's tend to maintance around here or lack thereof the purification filters probably have not be changed since the building of the ice plant. TIT.

I don't think anyone posted this but there is a sort of vacine you can take. Forget how it works but you have to drink it a couple weeks before you go. It is only around if I remember about 70% effective.

Yes I can confirm it is not 100% effective as per my post above

But who knows maybe I would have been in worse shape if I hadn't taken it? It is not cheap and last about 3 months.

Glad you survived the whole thing, at least they have the hose by the toilet

LBM,

That dodgy water deal had to do with story that ran in the Post or Nation. There was an investigative reporter that lived in Pattaya while they were having the water crisis. So one day he followed the truck that was bringing in water back to the source. They were filling the truck from one of the klongs near BKK you probably wouldn't want to swim in. Apparently, it was a quick way to make money on cheap water. TIT.

One way to help keep your hands clean before eating if you don't have access to water, is to carry that hand sanitizer gel in those little tubes. Supposed to work. I took some to Vietnam this year, and used it a bit when out in the countryside once or twice. Never got sick, but then again, I'd been eating the local food for a bit too.

One thing you left out of your list of things not to eat -- sticking your tongue up a TG's read end, lol! Not kidding, I know someone who did that and got pretty sick thereafter, ha! He thinks it may have been giardia, as it was still bugging him a tad when he got home, weeks later, so he went to a doc in the States to finally kill whatever it was. Funny, I've never had that problem, maybe my TG's use the hose more effectively, hehehehe...

Long live the "Hose by the Toilet"!

Balls:

I would really question that investigative reporter.

Why would they drive to the outskirts of BKK when they can go 5 kilometers out of Pattaya and fill up at one of the privately owned water wells? They would spend much more in benzine than they would in the cost of the water.

Very dubious investigative reporting if you ask me.

I would like to see an investigation report of all those investigating reporters who seem to think that there are so many items in Thailand that need investigation. I am sure the results of those investigations would be the most interesting.

If I can find it, I'll try to post the "bad water truck" report, lol! At the time I heard this story, it came from a reliable source.

Now you got me curious all over again...

As I said, you arrive at a point where you rarely get sick.
If you eat alot of processed foods in the west, and have a cooler climate.
The shock of chillis (that move food into the intestines faster) and the heat, and bacterial water and is flushed with them. The absorbed matter with any trace bacteria will upset you greatly.
Even after many years I still shit like a front line trooper.
But I can eat Thai and never get the belly bugs.
Bangkok (if your inferring Pattaya is bad) is far worse.
The added soup of pollution that is breathed jolts the nervous system more. The food is on Par, but the air isnt.
If you avoid (water swallowing that isnt bottled) things that enter your mouth, that are possibly unpure, you will be ok.
Eat fish that swims in a tank and you select.
Washed clean fruits.
Mackas and KFC.
Skip the ice.
You should be fine.
The advice collectively here should be a start.
Eventually these torments will cease.
If not f*** Asian hookers at home, and play Thai music in the room.
