I was sick during the entire two weeks I was in Pattaya over Christmas and New Years. It was pneumonia I carried with me from Saudi Arabia. I have never been sick from eating anything dubious in Thailand. It seems to be a constitutional thing.

Back home now and feeling fine. The morning I left (this morning) I talked to an English couple in the elevator at Leks Hotel. Both got sick this vacation, shits, vomiting, cramps, etc. Also, on the plane back met two girls that were traveling back after two weeks in Chaeng Mai, Phuket, and one of the islands off shore. One got sick as hell, while the other didn't. I wonder if more people are getting sick than anyone knows. Anyway great posts and I have some new things to try and to eliminated from diet next year. Hmmm no ice though, that is really a tough one.

Little Big Man, Maybe we are missing the obvious...have you had the same girlfriend in Pattaya on all the trips you have been sick? Are you married? Do you get along OK with gf? Maybe you are being poisoned. You also have not mentioned any of the restaurants that you frequent, why not? If I remember from a couple of years ago aren't you a Vietnam Vet? Did you ever get sick in Nam? I have eaten chicken and bugs off the food carts and never gotten sick, but pork off the carts is another story. Violently sick from pork off a cart on Walking St. The lady from Pattaya Centre Hotel is smart. Stick to soup if you have a dodgy stomach.

But never ate in town, always at army camp. Had to laugh when you mentioned possiblity of girlfriend poisoning me. But no steady girlfriend here. Chuckle again, as I considered all the posibilities, maybe housekeeping was spiking my bottled water with tap water, since I did not tip enough. LOL. As far as which restaurants I visited, I did give this more than idle thought as I tried to figure out what was going on. Ate at Leks Hotel for breakfast, once for dinner buffet. Sportsman Inn on Soi 13, Sportsman (I think) on Soi 6? once. Pizza Hut for salid bar, sizzler for salid bar. And the most suspect was a cheeseburger at a restaurant across from Jomtien beach. Tasted funny but to me all hamburger beef tastes funny in thailand. Thought it might have been the cheese. As far as soups go, I love to eat it, and do in thailand but was told to be careful, as they use tap water in the soup and if they don't bring it to a boil then hello salmonella. But of course something lite like that boiled rice soup is great for an upset stomach. I might add that although westerners probably get sick alot more than Thais, they are not immune from food poisoning in their country, as one TG behind the front desk was telling me she got very sick from seafood she ate.

Thais get food poisoning "sore my stomach" But in general they actaully accumulate so much intestinal bacterias in kills alot of them before age 60. Where as we on high processed diets of fat, salt, and cholestrol, die from cancers down in the bowel, heart attacks linked to obesity, and bllod clots /strokes. Thais in a market place (while they are trying to wave away flies of meats and fish) have no real knowledge of the effects of heat of red meat, and fish too is eaten in various stages of decay. That burger (that tasted funny often a sign your mouth tried to warn the brain not to swallow) was possibly your culprit. I stick to corperation food outlets Maccas..KFC...Pizza huts.........Clean reputable western and Thai places. You sound like you have already taken the due care, but still get sick, so there must be a common thread. Especially as you have also mentioned that vietnam was a place you experienced in trying conditions. So its not climate and/or sensitive stomach. Did you eat burgers at that joint alot? What did you put on your plate at the leks breakfast place? Sportsmans is fine. But christ if your getting nuked in Pattaya (everytime) Sounds like you now owe the brothers here a warning list of your haunts of eating, so some navigating around them (especially the burger joint) can be done.

Never ate at TheLek hotel in Pattaya but I believe that they do buffets, probably a good cause of illness with all those flies on the food. FWIW I always carry Disento tablets for belly ache and worse. I can buy over the counter in LOS very cheap but in the UK must have a prescription. It is strange that you can buy some anti-biotics over the counter in supermarkets. I have had a bit of a piss problem lately, probably Clamhydia, the hospital made me take 4 large anti-biotic tablets there and then (Zithromax), no booze for 24 hours then all ready to go again. I may try and buy some of these over the counter in LOS. Much better than going on a 7 day coarse and knocking the Singhas on the head.

As I'm reflecting back, I can think of only two things that I consistently ate the day before getting sick on each of my trips. Ice cream and ice (in drinks). I can forego the ice cream but still having trouble doing without my ice in the hot climate. If I get sick in May when I return, the ice will go though. Also, the day before, I had a type of thai soup, can't remember the name but had curry in it. I have been warned (even in Cambodia) to avoid soups in restaurants because sometimes they don't bring the tap water to a boil, prior to adding the ingredients and bingo, there you've got it. I might mention though that taking a daily dose of pepto bismo (1 tablespoon) the whole trip, eliminated the diarhhea, so it definately was not as bad this year, but I still vomited 5 or 6 times over 15 or 20 hours. Also, the stomach/intestinal cramps were really dibilitating, so got some buscopan from a pharmacy for the next time, if there is one. It is an antispamodic drug that can give fairly quick relief, I am told.

Yes, it could definitely be the ice cream. Sometimes the ice cream will melt and the vendors will just re-freeze it. This leads to food poisoning.
