This is the 3rd year out of 4 that I have been sick in Pattaya nd from I guess the food. I just finished a grueling 36 hours of vomiting, diarhea, and cramps. Feel about 75% normal today and got out and did a few things. Am I the only one that has this problem? My immune system is top notch, never get sick at home, not even colds or flu. I am almost certain it is salmonella but damned if I can figure out how to prevent it. I don't eat roadside stalls, and I know many of you do, and don't get sick. I try and eat at restaurants with good reputations, and most I heard of from members. Thai doctor told me 2 years ago that western and eastern digestive tracks differ in the type of bacteria that thrive there and maybe if I stayed in Thailand long enough I too could have these special little critters without getting so damn sick. There has to more to it than that because most of you don't live here and don't get sick on almost every trip. Any suggestions, other than avoiding Thailand? Any preventive medicene suggestions? Or perhaps your own amusing or otherwise stories?

Some info, Avoid chicken it seems to be the easiest meat to pick-up salmonella even after 20 minutes at room temperature. Avoid most fruits and vegatables that would be washed with the local water supply. It would be help to provide a list of what you are eating here and from where. Actually I eat off of the roadside stalls a lot, but I stick to the barbaque items that are hot off the grill, I never got sick off of those items. The Thai doctor's advise is correct and cleaniness here in food preparation is not that great even in the 5 star establishments.

If you are going to be taking antibiotics, do NOT stop after 1-2 days (i.e. "When you feel better") - you *must* take the full regimen of 7-10 days of 2x a day. This is essential to prevent the development of 'super strains' that would otherwise be bred to be immune to antibiotics.

true and please I am no doctor... be carefull when you buy OTC drugs (antibiotics) asthere are many other issues involved.. plus if you take when you are drinking, they don't work so well !!!! Last week I was in my apartment and my wife was in the bathroom... I had to shit so bad, had the runs.... typical Thai, locks the f***ing door while she is in there. I stood outside the bathroom and shit all over the floor.... came out like water.... she opens the door.... looks.... and says "you clean"..... I said ok... so I cleane dit up... this was a result of her using a strap on dildo up my ass. All my ass muscles were stretched and I couldnt hold the shit in.... lesson: be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.

Kissing Thai woman in Pattaya can cause immediate transfer of a range of bacteria. I built up an immune (having lived there a while) But "ice" is for all purposes just frozen local water often. Fruits do need to be re-washed with bottled heated water. Dont brush teeth with tap water, gaggle in shower. Pool water shouldnt be swallowed, and mouth and ear wash used after it. Many pattaya girls eat bugs (that were killed using spraying of crops) also Pork undercooked, and chicken are best avoided. Any sauces ( in western hotels even) that have a milk or cheese base. You will find that hot climates and dehydration along with any bacteria that works down past the gut to intestinal tracts, trigger in new Thai tourists (for first few trips) often your problems. Fish in Seafood resturants that are swimming, along with Fast foods, and bottled water, might be your best advice til you build up an immune system of the Thai kind more. I got sick way back 20 years ago, though "fever" from air borne mozzies belted me more. But like all of us, the shit that comes out in Thailand tends to be pretty free flowing. The drugs above do help, but without (as already mentioned) your usual diet being stated its hard to help. Other than clear avoid saliva exchanges, swallowing of waters (salt - pool- tap-ice) poultry and chillis In soups. (see tap water again) Avoid dairy products -hydrate alot. And coat stomach with those bacteria drinks (50 mls) in supermarkets available. Most importantly make a list of what your doing and eating each trip, and look for links. : : Ps I do none of the above now, which does prove that immunity builds slowly but surely. I am still very conscious of "ice" that being the highest risk.

I use bottled mineral water, I wash my hands frequently. I don't eat from the food carts. I stay away from chicken and I still get a mild case of the shits each trip. Soon as I get home everything straightens out in a few days. One thing I try and avoid like the plague is farting, you don't know what coming out. : (
