Gus
Have any of you mature guys had an hip replacement op in Thailand?
What is a ball park figure of costing for the op?

I can have a free one in the UK but it will mean being out of action for some time, something I would rather encounter in LOS.
TIA

The main hospitals in bangkok are bangkok nursing home (BNH) and bumrungrad. Check their websites for prices - anyone know whether they work like rack rates and it is possible to get cheaper deals by negotiating or what not? I've paid their website prices in the past.

(btw, not saying that the other hospitals in bangkok are no good - those two are the internationally famous ones. I've heard that there are others that specialise in, say, laser eye surgery that are excellent too).

Here's a tip:

Many of the better Thai doctors practice at the two hospitals mentioned in the previous post, but also teach at Chulalongkorn or Siriraj.

I have a friend who had his hernia repaired at Chula for a small fraction of what they wanted to charge at Bumrungrad. And another guy I met recently, came from California to have his knee repaired at Siriraj.

Granted, the hernia guy lived here for a long time, but the knee guy didn't. I don't think there is a residency requirement, and you are going to get the best possible medical treatment at a teaching hospital. The accommodations may not be as grand, but you won't be very aware of them for a while after surgery, in any case...

Just a thought.

I am quite sure that you can negotiate a very good deal on a hip replacement surgery in Thailand, especially if you don't care if you ever walk again.

If you expect to get some "action" before you are fully healed, make sure the TG speaks very good English and understands you are still in recovery. One time I had some partially torn ligaments in my sholder, and even after I told the TG girl not to touch that part of my body she damaged my ligaments even worse during an oily.

Personally, I would get it done in UK, since this is not minor surgery, and a mediocre (or worse) outcome could be devasting.

What makes you think that the upscale BK hospitals are mediocre or worse compared to the British NHS or the "free" standards elsewhere in Europe? Standards at Bumrungrad and Samitivej etc. seems to be leveled with US and Europe even or espscially for the demanding methods.

It's their treatment of trivia which I doubt the most... too much prescription etc. When it comes to high tech they are state of the art I think. But sorry (sorry???) ; no personal experience here. Hips doing just fine so far...

Agreed.

I don't know what the quality of treatment in the public hospitals in Thailand are like (I went in one once, it wasn't pretty, it wasn't clean, it took several hours to be seen - but then, it was only slightly worse than some back home in Blighty) but as for the top international ones?

The way I think about it, they are being used by Thailand's elite, who are a damned sight richer than me! They'll be wanting top class treatment - they can afford to fly first class to the best in the world if local is no good.

My experience of BNH (for very minor stuff, mind) was that it was utterly top class. That said, though, it is hard for me to appraise the quality of the treatment as opposed to the quality of the service (exceptionally clean, no waiting time, constant attention, most of the nurses were cute as a button, all the equipment was sparkling new - though again, I've no way of knowing whether it was state of the art or just recently bought!).

Haam Sup's advice seems very good. Chula is internationally renowned - middle class/hi so thais have told me that they have been treated there (again, v cheaply. But it was organised by through their network, so they had insider knowledge of who was good and who was not). And there are small specialist clinics for various things that are better than the major international places for specific treatments.

But Mr Alan *does* have a point. I am always shocked by the prevalence of bandit health providers in non-western countries. They DO exist, they WILL screw you. It ought to go without saying (though that they exist shows that it doesn't), but DYFR! (do your f... research - which is, I guess, what you are doing here.... But the good ones are as good as private places back home.

Mr Alan
My main concern about a hip replacement surgery in Thailand is that I suspect it is not a common procedure there. It is not like other medical procedures where foreigners are likely to come to Thailand to have this procedure and a vacation at the same time.

Mick,

I am afraid that UK hospitals are, as a whole, as dangerous as ones in the third world. Aside from the pandemic of MRSA and VRSA in British Hospitals, some other recent revelations by British Government and Media include:

Over 50% of British Hospitals do not have proper procedures in place to prevent spread of infections between patients

50% of British Hospitals failed basic sanitation requirements in their food preparation operations

Mis-disposal of Bio-Hazardous waste (bloody bandages put on food trays for disposal)

Sheets on beds being flipped over between patients to save money

Bedpans and urine bags having to be emptied/changed by visitors due to unavailability of staff

Patients not being seen by doctors on a daily basis

The list goes on and on.

As a Brit told me at my Local: "The UK is becoming another Third World country..."

When I am in the UK, if I get ill I either self-medicate or catch the first plane home to see my doctor...

Last I heard, the most Elite of the Elite, His Majesty was cared for at Siriraj. I'm sure he wasn't in a Semi-Private or ward bed, though

The best doctors often teach at Chula or another medical school affiliated hospital, where fees are much lower than the Bumrungrads and BNHs, but also do more lucrative work at those boutique hospitals. And the idea that good care is network-dependent is, I believe, quite true, but more so at the private hospitals. It's true everywhere, really, but it's taken for granted in our home countries. Just that much tougher to do in LOS where there are bigger social/language barriers.

OP, hope you find the best Thailand has to offer; in my experience, that is pretty good.
