I have used DTAC and Orange. Orange had very good rates but if Dr Love is correct then not as good as it was.

Still 1-2 Call seems to do what I want ie email pics from my phone. Can't find out if Orange or DTAC will let me do that.

Don't do very much calling within Thailand. Mostly You work bar tonight? Yes. Ok I pay BF tonight. OK. Meet you at your bar at 9pm OK? OK. Good bye. ie about 1 minute.

I have Orange now but still can't figure out if I can e-mail pics to myself?

Most of my expensive calls are back to North America, that is what eats up my baht. Must say the quality is very good and is the price for calls back to North America.

I think 1-2 call has good prices to North America also or at least they did from what I read.

Orange has, like 1-2-Call, GPRS services. So I guess, as Daffy said, that you should be possible to send by email.

But I guess it won't be cheap.

Calls outside Thailand are priced as CAT charges. Calling America costs around THB 7/minute.

Rates for international calls should be the same for all operators.

DrLove - I guess with this special promotion, Orange no longer is a low-price leader, considering that most of my calls as well are in the 1-2 minutes range. Might they have done that because they were losing their shirts, or is it just simply that now they have established their customer base, it is time to rip them off (after having established that most place 1-2 minute calls).

I found that by switching my plan to FreedomPlus, I consistently get 2.5 Baht per minute, and no issues. Never checked if they round up or down, but I do swear by their customer service which I found to be excellent on the phone.

Bimmher - if you have a laptop, or a good DSL connection handy, get something like either the Vonage softphone, or a Vonage VOIP box - your calls to the US then end up being free. That's what I do - the added benefit is that you also end up with a US phone number, so people can call you, and never know they are calling Thailand

There's also a newer service called 'Lingo' which offers flat rate unlimited calls to Asia and Europe as well - haven't tried that one yet, so can't really suggest or recommend it.

I went to http://www.vonage.com and it looks like their cheapest plan is "$14.99/month Vonage Basic 500 Plan". with 3.9c/min after 500 minutes. So how is it that you are getting calls to the US for free?

My bad - Vonage.com (as well as other VOIP services) are subscription services, with you paying a monthly fee. Where they become useful is when you use Vonage to replace your regular home phone (as I have done), as overall, it ends up being cheaper in terms of monthly fees (I have the unlimited plan), than a regular phone connection.

Calls within the US and Canada are 'free' with those plans (unless you get the 500 minute plan) and calls to foreign destinations are pretty cheap.

Where this becomes 'free calls to the US' is when you bring your Vonage box (or your Vonage softphone) with you to bkk - plug it into your DSL line, and the same conditions apply than if you were in the US. The box doesn't know it's no longer in the US, so you can make the same unlimited calls to all US destinations -- just do NOT make local BKK/LOS calls, as you will then pay their LD rates

This is worthwhile if you get Vonage to replace your existig phone services (or add on to them), or if you make so many calls from LOS that the Vonage monthly fee ends up being cheaper.

Sorry for the initial confusion - I hope this clears things up...

An inexpensive way to call overseas is with Skype (www.skype.com) using VoIP. All you need a computer, a headset/microphone, and an internet connection. I haven't tried it with dialup, but supposedly it will work with a 33.6 kbps connection, but surfing at the same time will likely kill the quality. The cost is determined by the called location, and for Europe and the US it is $0.023 a minute. If the other party has Skype on their computer, you can talk PC-PC for free! I have used it to and from Europe, Asia, and the US and the quality is quite good.

As for SIM cards, I have found that my US carrier (ATT/Cingular) can only SMS to Orange. Yahoo PC-Mobile SMS (which is a nice tool that you can download from Yahoo Asia) only works with DTAC and AIS.

To transfer your photos, the best way is with Bluetooth, IR, or USB. The cost is free, but if your phone and computer don't support it you're out of luck. I have Bluetooth on my phone and it makes moving files and photos very easy.

hpesoj,
I hope this post is not to late for your trip. A great place to buy all types of SIM cards is the Cell Phone Graveyard is on the 5th or 6th floor of the MBK Center. You can't miss this floor it's the one with the maze of small counters. I'm from the USA so I spent about 3 hours going from kiosk to kiosk asking if they had Tri-Band cells. I had already bought a SIM card at Robinson’s for 500 Baht so I didn't need one but they had hand written signs of all the SIM card companies and the cell #'s. You can actually pick your number. I saw many people selling back their cell phones I guess to upgrade to the newest models. So if you hangout by the escalators you can see all the people returning their cells (they are the ones carrying the opened boxes) and work out a deal with them. I got a very nice used unlocked Panasonic Tri-Band GD55 for a very low price. I would tell you the price but I can't remember, sorry. I know it’s unlocked because it was just used in India without any trouble. As far as SIM card I use 1-2 Call and haven't had any problems. I hope this helps.

MBK is the place for used cells.

Ya, I am a Yank, all balls no brains! I have such a time remembering where I am in MBK!

All those women!!

I was told the cell phone graveyard was on the top floor so I just went up the escalators until I saw all the kiosks and no stores. More used cells than you can shake a stick at!!!
