Hugh,
A whole load of good second hand laptops at your price yeasterday in panthip.
No problem with the import duty so long as you can convince them it is for personal use. Do not carry a laptop openly thru UK customs, put it in a bigger bag or backpack.
Just so long as this lady is not called Na and has a teenage daughter!!

I don't know about the UK, but in the US one can a brand new HP or Compaq laptop with those specs for 40,000 baht (about $1,000 USD).

Saw some Toshibas under 40K on the site given by Abrak.

Let a farang do the purchase. In that case you can buy it VAT free and then import it later as an personal item.

Saves you 7%.

Dunno about you lot, but the fact that the brother is already quoting prices double that of what one of us has discovered raises a few alarm bells in my mind.

If you just want a machine so she can chat with you, I'd just plump 20k on a secondhand machine from Pantip and be done with that. Why bother with all that Bluetooth and aircard nonsense. My sense is that the technology infrastructure here in Thailand is not stable enough yet to justify it.

A broadband connection will suffice - she's not a student so will only use it from home. I pay 400 a month for unlimited ADSL connection.

Caveat Emptor

The 'aircard' that her brother is talking about is a card that slips into the pcmia slot of her laptop and allows her to access the internet using the mobile phone network. No laptops are sold with built in mobile data network connections.

The aircard has nothing whatsoever to do with wi-fi or wireless lan which are wireless local area networks.

The aircard has the advantage that you have wireless connectivity wherever you go. Generally it will use a technology call GPRS which is basically 'non-dial up data via your mobile phone'. The problem with GPRS is that it is very slow - I mean slower than even a 56k dial up modem.

There is a new technology called 'Edge' which promises much faster data speeds. At the moment, it is only being offered by DTAC and only works in central Bangkok (elsewhere you revert back to gprs).

I use EDGE with my mobile phone but I dont notice any improvement in speed (some telecom geek explained the reason why but I didnt really understand - something to do with gateways).

A laptop can access GPRS or EDGE using an aircard or via a mobile phone (mobile phone must be EDGE compliant) and a connection (basically either bluetooth or a cable). Some laptops as well as some mobiles have bluetooth built in.

An aircard will cost between Bt10-15k and GPRS rates differ with the various mobile phone providers. DTAC offers unlimited usuage for Bt999/month.

Incidentally, your TGF's brother generally makes a lot of sense.

However, I think that your TGF would be far better off getting either a standard internet connection running off her laptop's built in 56k modem (this is very easy to set up and costs very little). It can also be used anywhere that has a phone socket.

If she is a serious internet user based mostly from home then get ADSL which costs around Bt600/month. (This requires a seperate modem but offers far higher data speeds.)

There is far more information than you could possibly need about ISPs and broadband at this site.

I warn against buying a Toshiba if you expect to have any service done by their agent in LOS

Chevalier are THE WORST agent for any brand, and they happen to support (or NOT) Toshiba in LOS

I've also never liked Toshiba laptops, they go way beyond on being proprietary, and without any benefits

I'd like to second the 'stay away from Toshiba' sentiment - crappiest laptops out there, in terms of getting service when you need it, and in terms of using parts that are proprietary -- second only to Compaq.

Seriously, considering the intended use, just pick up a second-hand laptop from a seller that agrees to stand behind it -- or if you have a Visa Gold card, buy it on that, and get the additional 2- or 3 year Visa provided warranty on the item -- it will provide protection agains breakage, loss, or theft. Usually costs an extra $100-$200, and is worth it if you fear damage or loss.

Thanks Bros for all the further input. You're all stars.
I think that I'll still see if she can get a Centrino for that price, either new or second hand. As stated, it would be nice to use it here afterwards for my business. I did check prices of them over here and they appear to cost more than over there. I think that the British market tries to raise the prices often by bundling up software and offering free hardware in their price, rather in the same way that they sell cars here with all the flutes and whistles.
I've got a latest copy of Computer Shopper and there's a section called Choosing a Budget Laptop. Of the nine reviewed, none is a Centrino, mostly Celeron M's and all of them are within £10 under £700! I looked through all the adverts for the spec of a !.6ghz Centrino and couldn't get anywhere near the 40000 baht mark.
So I think that I'll get one from Thailand and my G/f can use it mainly at home with a broadband connection, or if she's working away, she can just use it off the battery somewhere where there's a wireless hot spot Perhaps she has bluetooth on her mobile, or otheriwse can just use the built in modem and plug it into a telephone socket. Several options available.
Thanks again, guys.

Success.
Got a ASUS Model: A3N
Intel® Centrino® processor 1.6 GHz (2MB, L2 Cache)
· 512 MB DDR
· 15 inch TFT Screen
· 40 GB hard disk
· DVD +/- RW Combo drive
· Wireless IEEE 802.11b/g

We had to beat the price down and the one that we were ordering was with 256 MB. G/Fs brother has written to say that they've made it 512MB at no extra cost. I wonder why they did that? We are paying 40000 bt, apparently reduced from 48000. This doesn't seem a bad price against British equivalents.
