Hi where should I go to get a good copy of MS Office while I'm in Bkk? Any specific suggestions? How much to pay?

When I bought this new laptop I put on a cracked copy of Office and it worked fine until I installed the Win XP service pack. Now I get an error looking for a specific file when I try to run (OR UNINSTALL!!!) Office. What a pain.

I need a good copy which'll install overtop of the cracked version and clean everything up but I'm in Japan where it's 1) expensive 2) usually Japanese-language, F.

Felix888:

I agree that you should go to Panthip plaza to look for software.

On a side note, incase you don't know.

IMO:

sorry to say, but I beileve you are S.O.L when it comes to installing a "hack" or "crack" version of any MS product using XP and having it run properly without having to uninstall the product every month.

From my limited knowledge of XP, it checks to make sure you have a REGISTERED and LICENCED copy of any of MS's products.

So, even if you get a good copy of any of their programs. If that copy has been registered by another user, then you will not be able to register your copy and hense, will only work for a limited amount of time. Limited meaning, I believe MS gives you around a month to register the software before it's disabled.

As mentioned you could install and uninstall after every month, which would allow you to use a crack copy. BUt, if you do not want to go through that hassle, then I suggest you bite the bullet and buy just by a licensed copy of the software.

Good luck!!

Or, just run Windows 2000 instead, which doesn't have these registration issues. You won't get the pretty graphics, but it's stable.

I walked through Pantip plaza July 2004. The only thing I considered buying (price wise) was software. Even original software were cheaper than what I experience in Norway. Microsoft products among those. Do not remember the price...

If you can get a copy of the corporate edition of Office 2003, you should be OK past 30 days and with updates. These versions do not require on-line activation because corporations make a single hard drive and clone the drive for all their PC's, and cannot be bothered with individual license keys. Same applies for Windows XP operating system.

The on-line activation versions only work with one specific machine because the activation process can uniquely identify each computer and associate it with a specific license key.

As noted, Widows 2000 and Office 2000 do not need on-line registration, just a license key. You can install the same license key on multiple machines since there is no on-line activation.

However, software sold for about 100 baht is not always what it is labeled. Sometimes it may say corporate edition, but it may require activation, or it may have a virus in it that will attempt to destroy your computer by flashing your bios with bogus software (beware of knock-off Adobe CD’s).

Which happened to a friend of mine. The trojan activated and wipped out his hard drives... plural.

There is no "consensus". There is only what I tell you. If you don't pay attention, I will slap you silly.

Get a corporate edition version and see if it works. Worst that can happen is that you wasted about $3.00 USD. Run a virus scan on the CD before you install anything.
