32 bit windows can only see 3 gigs, that is correct. My son recently bought a MacBookPro with the OS X operating system (which in Unix based) running on an Intel processor. The quality of workmanship is very impressive and the operating system is as stable as a rock. I never thought I would say this, but from now on I going to recommend the Mac to anyone (non-geeks, that is) looking for a new computer. If Apple really wanted to give mickeysoft a run for their money they would make OS X available for all Intel based PCs. You can dual boot windows on the Intel based Macs. ms-office is available for the Mac, or you can use OpenOffice. Also there is CrossOver for the Mac which allows you to run numerous windows programs on your Mac as if they were native OS X applications. OS X Leopard is, for the most part, a 64 bit operating system, but Snow Leopard, due out next month, has taken it all the way, i.e., all the applications have been re-written as native 64 bit applications.

32 bit Windows can address up to about 3.3 GB memory. Also, with 4 1GB sticks you can run dual-channel mode. You can't with 3. (Although a laptop might not be configurable to do this.) Memory is cheap.

From that same page, "Memory 4GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - 2 X 2GB 6GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 1 X 4GB + 1 X 2GB [+$345.00] ** 8GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 2 X 4GB [+$685.00] ** ** 32 bit OS editions have a memory limitation of 2.8GB. Other hardware of application limitations may further prevent use of all installed memory. Windows Vista 64bit is required for memory configurations of 4GB and above." Run Linux on such a configuration and you would have an impressive machine.

it has nothing to do with the cost - additional memory contributes to speeding up the use of your computer, if the system did not artificially limit it's use. A system with 4gb or 6gb and able to use it can keep more apps simultaneously open, and switches between them a lot faster than one hobbling along with 3gb, when it has 4 or 6 or 8 installed. My Mac desktop is quite happy with 16gb of RAM that it can use, and ditto with my MacBook Pro with 8gb - won't be seeing that on a Windows system unless you fork out additional $$$ for the 64-bit Windows version (and if you are lucky and all your apps still work in 64-bit environments).

Dual processor 64 bit is pretty much standard for windows now.....lol, and most software is ported for them, all new software....lol. It's actually a shame that quite a bit of software isn't ported, or updated, for mac. That must be why they use a windows based intel processor now......at $1k more expensive........lol. Dell laptops kick ass, especially with the 9 cell batteries.

Asian brand Acer is very good. I am in the USA now. I have an Acer for the last three years. Today, I just bought an Acer for $300 to give it as a gift to my niece. Compaq (by HP) is also cheap in Thailand. Other brands like HP, Dell, And Lenovo are expensive but your budget of 40,000 baht will cover every thing. I never buy expensive laptop. I buy mid priced ($500-$700US) laptop that has plenty of memory and an Intel processor. If you can wait till Oct 12, you will get Windows 7 which is far stable that Vista crap. If you buy from one of those small stores in Seacon, I think they can install Windows 7 now because the RTM is out to MSDN and TechNet and available on Pirate Bay. If you are going to buy from a chain store, you need to wait till October 12. Things to look for if you're going to spend close to 40K Intel Dual Core 4 Gig Memory 300-500 Gig HD Dedicated Video Memory (not shared with your system memory) 6-8 hours of battery Integrated Web cam. Other nice to have stuff: blue tooth, finger print reader, glossy color.

I have a Dell Inspirion 3500 I purchased 12 years ago. The case is cracked open, electronics hanging out, display barely on the broken hinges, contacts on several keys worn out, but amazingly the thing still boots up. I used it extensively for 8 years, then bought an Acer. Acer lasted 2 years, will never buy one again. Now I'm back to Dell.
