the #1 problem with mobile electronics gear; laptops, netbooks, mobiles, iPhones, camera/video, gaming gadgets, mp3 etc is device Shock.... warranty servicers always imply..... "Dude you dropped it ! "... impacts like accidental drops, breifcase and backpack lugging unloading around adds up on the plastic case structure and electrical contacts... many laptop screens and hardrives fail #2 problem internal heat breaks down electronic circuitry; shorts and opens.... more years of service means more chances of failure...power supply areas #3 weather elements... cold rain or snow, hot sun, wind, dust brings on external conditions... keyboard damage #4 food and liquid spills; coffee sploosh on the keyboard drips to motherboard or ports # 5 operating and app software gets dated over time... mamasoft barely online servess Win Xp 3 years reliability issue claims report ? WTF....thats 12 electronic manufacturing calender Quarters gone by.... and most of us tech savvy know when to ditch the old beast for a newer model.... 6 Qs and your gadget is old school ! Wisdom: Dont drop your gadget ! and Do drop your idget into nice tight Thai P most issues Ive had with 25 years laptop use and abuse has been with Screen outages due to backlights and hinge contact opens.... many screens can be fixed replaced..... HPs have been my #1 on the screen shit list !.... Toshiba and ASUS been reliable.... never owned a Macbook or Sony.... MSI, ASUS, SAGER; non propriatary / customizable models have been great.... buy a middle road unit / uninstall the bloatware and load up your user apps

IBM sold their laptop business to Lenovo in 2005. http://www.lenovo.com After over twenty years of using various PCs and becoming somewhat of a computer geek I never thought I would say this, but if you are one of those who doesn't want to know anything more about his computer than necessary, buy a MacBook Pro. The operating system alone is reason enough to switch from ms-windows.

Earlier this year I bought MSI Wind U120 (10") to carry something small on my trips. Initially I was happy. Now I want to change it. Things I dislike the most: * Screen resolution (as mentioned by DD). Some applications are a pain to look at in that small screen. * Came with 1gb of memory and cannot increase it. After having bought it tried to add memory and that is impossible. Memory is soldered to the motherboard and there is no slot for additional memory. Recently I have seen a Gateway 11.6" 2gb memory that a friend has. And it works much better than my MSI U120. Conclusion, avoid the ones with small screen resolutions and less than 2Gb memory.

The HP mini 2140 can be configured with 2GB RAM and has a high res option that maxes out at 1366x768 with a 10 inch (diagonal) screen. You can see full web pages without problem. Also can get a 6-cell battery that lasts me almost 8 hours - maybe 6 with heavy use. Costs more than most netbooks (about $700 USD), but after 6 months I am happy with it. About 1 kilo, so weight isn't an issue for me. Some people have said real nice things about MSI Wind netbooks, so SMEGA's comments are interesting. HP's rating are at the bottom of the reliability study. But, maybe I will get lucky. I don't plan on spilling food on it or dropping it......

I have had a toshiba labtop for a few years now it still works but im not impressed attal. It heats up and cuts out mostly in the middle of something. I have to set it on top of an ashtray to work longer than an hour. I bring it to los and I just get by otherwise its in the cudboard. This happened from day one and the support sucked. Never again piece of crap, shame though everything else works great on it. Maybe a list of the worst labtops would be better

On the other end of the size spectrum, I bought also this year a big and heavy 17" Toshiba with 4GB. This one is too heavy to be carrying it outside -at most I just move it at home from one room to another (but that is why I got for trips the smaller MSI) ; however, as opposed to the MSI, I am very happy with the Toshiba. Fast (much faster since I got rid of Vista and installed W 7) and great screen too. Battery doesn't last too long, but that doesn't bother me as I seldomly use it without having it connected to the electric netowrk; I have it as desktop replacement.
