So we are NOt talking about spyware, but malware. There is actually very little spyware... As I said Alexa and Gator are the main ones. They run in the back ground and 'study' your surf behaviour.
The ones that hijack your homepage, corrupt your files and the likes are not spyware.
A very good program to get rid of any kind of malware is HiJack This.

Dr. Love. No offence intended and hope none was taken. Spyware, maleware, what is the difference. I had 55 items on my computer according to the Webroot scan. These included AdBouncer. SurfSideKick, ToolBarEnhancer, AboutBlank, and on and on. There are fifty more. Are these malware? If so and not spyware what is their purpose. My original question stands.
You thoughts please. I am sincerely interested in what you have to say.

Spyware tracks your surfing habits (it spies on you but only that).... As I said the toolbar of Alexa has spyware.
Malware modifies (or adds) software applications for the sole purpose of changing your habits by forcing certain URLs or advertising popups. Good example is Mywebsearch.
But I guess that the terms have been mixed up and people (including Microsoft) use 'Spyware' for what is actually 'Malware'.
It actually doesn't matter how you call it, it's is annoying.

Sanook, please help us out and tell us the name of the "new anti-spyware program" that succeeded in solving (or at least finding) your problem.
Anyone else out there infected with the pernicious malware program that hijacks your webpage and replaces it with a huge black banner announcing "WARNING YOU'RE IN DANGER" blah blah blah "Remove all spyware from your computer..." etc. etc.? No defense that I run has succeeded in getting at this one.

Wow, Doc Love! Thanks for the advice. I've downloaded Hijack This and obtained my logfile. Now I'm going through it to eliminate the files identified on geekstogo. Even if it doesn't work it makes me feel better to know I'm not alone. Misery loves copany!
