Does anybody know how to do this? When I'm in the office I can't open 'interactive' websites or webtools like Messenger or even Bangkokchat. I'm assuming it's because I'm behind a firewall. I can, though, access sites like this.

So what's the story? Is there a way I can circumvent the firewall?

Any suggestions anyone?

Yes, yes, I know I should be working, but that's why I hire staff. I just sit in the office and think high thoughts.

Do you have access to the server?? One of our secretaries was forever on MSN when she should be working. I could block within XP specific sites/applications from accessing the internet. Problem is that its a global application of the rule.

And of course you have your firewalls as well. I'm no techno, but if you can't access the server - I do not know how you would do it.

Cheers

Bro' Babaganoosh (spelling?) is probably your best advisor on "tunnelling" and such like but until he replies here, why not try:

http://www.thevirtualbrowser.com

then insert the url of the website that you need and off ye go...!

If Baba' doesn't reply by the time I get home I'll check m'hard drive and see what else I have there for yah.

I just had the same problem I will copy what Microsoft wrote to me

Thank you for writing to MSN Messenger Technical Support. My name is Orio and I will be assisting you.

Before addressing your email, please accept our apologies for the delay in answering your email. We normally respond within 24 hours, but we have received an unusually large number of messages recently. We appreciate your patience as we handle every customer request as quickly as possible.

From your email, I read that you received a 80072efd error code when you tried to sign in on MSN Messenger. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.

The following condition may apply:

- You may have an incorrect HTTP proxy setting in MSN Messenger.
- You have incorrect HTTP proxy settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
- Your software firewall on your computer is blocking MSN Messenger.

To help you with this, please try the following solutions in the order that they are listed:

I. Test the proxy settings in MSN Messenger. To do this, use the method for your version of Messenger.

1. Test the HTTP proxy settings:

a. In the main MSN Messenger window, click "Options" on the Tools menu.
b. In the list of topics on the left of the Options dialog box, click "Connection", and then click "Advanced Settings".
c. If the Server box under HTTP Proxy in the Options - Advanced Connection Options dialog box is not empty, click "Test HTTP Proxy Connection" to test the connection.
d. If the test returns an error message, there is a problem with the proxy settings.
e. Verify the proxy settings with your system administrator, and then click "Test HTTP Proxy Connection" to test the connection again.
f. If the test does not return an error message, try to sign in to MSN Messenger again.

2. Clear the HTTP proxy settings:

a. In the main MSN Messenger window, click "Options" on the Tools menu.
b. In the list of topics on the left of the Options dialog box, click "Connection", and then click "Advanced Settings".
c. If they are not already empty, select the text in the boxes under HTTP Proxy, and then press "DELETE".
d. Try to sign in to MSN Messenger again.

II. Optimize the HTTP proxy settings in Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:

a. To access the Internet Options dialog box, use the method for your operating system:

1. Click "Start", and then click "Control Panel".
2. Click "Network and Internet Connections".
3. Click "Internet Options".

b. On the "General" tab, click "Delete Cookies" in the Temporary Internet Files section.
c. When you are prompted to confirm, click "OK".
d. Click "Clear History".
e. When you are prompted to confirm, click "OK".
f. Click "Delete Files".
g. Select the "Delete all offline content" check box, and then click "OK".
h. Click "Settings".
i. Adjust the amount of disk space to use setting to 100 megabytes (MB).
j. Click "View Files".
k. When the View Files window appears, press CTRL+A to select all the files, and then press "DELETE".
l. When you are prompted to confirm, click "Yes", and then close the window.
m. Click "OK" to close the Settings dialog box.

III. If you cannot browse, clear the proxy settings, and then try to browse again. To reset the proxy settings for Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the Tools menu, click "Internet Options".
c. Click the "Connections" tab, and then click "LAN Settings".
d. Under Proxy server, clear the "Address" and the "Port" check box.
e. Clear the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" check box.
f. Click "OK" two times.

IV. If you cannot locate the Web site, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for help.

V. Ensure that MSN Messenger is permitted through your application firewall. Since you have Norton Internet Security and if you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2, I recommend the following suggestions:

a. For Windows Firewall (applicable only if you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2) :

1. Click on the Windows’ “Start” button, choose “Run”, type in “FIREWALL.CPL” and hit “Enter” to open the “Windows Firewall” dialog box.
2. On the “General” tab if “On” is selected then the Windows Firewall is enabled. Proceed to follow the steps listed below if the Windows Firewall is enabled.
3. Click on “Exceptions” and in the list of “Programs and Services” select “MSN messenger” if it exists and click “Delete”
4. Click “Add program” and browse to C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger and double click on the file “Msnmsgr” (the file name may or may not be followed by the extension “.exe” based on your computer settings). Ensure the file is added to the “Programs and Services” list and MSN Messenger is checked.
5. Click “OK” to save changes.

b. For Norton Internet Security / Norton Personal Firewall:

1. Right-click on the Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall icon in your system tray near the clock.
2. From the menu, click on Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall. This will show you the Norton Security Center.
3. Click “Personal Firewall”.
4. On the right hand side of the window, click “Configure”.
5. Click on the “Program Control” tab.
6. Pleased remove all instances of MSNMSGR.exe (MSN Messenger) from the “Manual Program Control List”.
7. Click on 'Add' to add MSN Messenger to the list. The MSN messenger executable is available in “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger”. Browse to this location and double click on the file “msnmsgr” (the file name may or may not be followed by the extension “.exe” based on your computer settings). Ensure the file is added to the “Manual Program Control List”.
8. In the “Internet Access” column, ensure that MSN Messenger is set to “Permit All”

V. Try to sign in to MSN Messenger again.

As one of our valued customers, your satisfaction is one of our primary concerns. Please feel free to write back if you have other questions or if we can be of assistance to you in any way.
