Quite happy with mine up until a week ago when it started to switch off for no reason. The only way I can get it back on again is by putting it on charge. If I power off I cannot get it back on again using the conventional means!.
If I press the home button and on /off switch at the same time the apple logo shows up but then gradually fades away!!

Usually a full restore can fix this problem (I have seen it before on some of my phones), and in all cases the restore fixed the issue. If your iPhone is an unlocked first generation, the use of different unlockers could also affect this reliability and stability.
Doing a comprehensive restore, and subsequently re-unlocking and jailbreaking the iPhone with the proper tool, usually fixes this problem.

Probably the electronics of the iPhone are fairly robust, it is just that touch screens in general tend to have problems after a long use. I have a touch screen control on my Audio/Video Receiver and it is almost shot. Some ATM machines with touch screen are shot, and I suspect they have to replace them fairly often.
But in the iPod demos I have seen, they appear to use a light touch, so maybe it will last.

I have not noticed anything similar with my Touch but, I did experience the death of 5 alphabets on the keyboard of mine within the second week of ownership.
After confirming these same five letters of the alphabet would not respond no matter what app I was running, I did a full restore to no avail then took it back to an Apple store the following day. They confirmed the malady, made no inquiries of me, and issued a replacement in under 15 minutes with an minorapology due to my inconvenience of having to replace 32 GBs worth of 'stuff'.
Just gotta love Apple all the more for such great service. Yeah!

Regarless of vendor when a no questions asked quick exhcnage takes place it is generally a sign of a regularly occuring problem/defect. One they folks at the shop have seen time and again. Thus no need to debate how/why/who was at fault.
Even at that still good of them not to make a hassel out of it.

In Apple's case, normally, things just keep on chugging along... But you can always opt for the additional two years of Apple Care extended warranties, if you tend to be on the conservative end of cautious consumers.
Apple's engineering standards are the best in the industry. Would you agree?
