That's gotta break some hearts:

Apple ousts ASUS as most reliable in new study

http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/12/07/asus.netbook.quality.lets.apple.take.lead/

ASUS' netbook quality lets Apple take lead

Apple has taken the lead as the most reliable computer maker thanks to ASUS' over-dependence on netbooks, a new RESCUECOM study says.

Where ASUS led the rankings in the third quarter of 2008 and in the spring this year, Apple has surged back to earn a reliability score of 374 for the third quarter this year, or more than twice ASUS' third-place 166 score. Much of ASUS' fall is attributed to first-wave Eee PC netbooks getting older and failing in relatively large numbers due to their poorer build quality.
"Now that many of the netbooks by ASUS have been out for a while, there is obviously a higher need for service," the repair firm's CEO David Millman says.

While the results are dependent on the ratio of computers shipped versus the number of requests for help that RESCUECOM receives and can fluctuate, the company notes that it's counting not just the construction of the system but the post-sale support from the manufacturer itself, taking some of its own influence out of the equation. Apple accounted for about 9 percent of US PC shipments in the summer but only made up 2.4 percent of calls.

Apple's lead was considerably narrower over second-place Lenovo, which reached 320 points, but fared much better against much larger competitors. Toshiba reached fourth place with a score of 165, while HP and its Compaq label were a distant fifth with 134. HP's ratio was especially poor; while it shipped 24.9 percent of computers, it represented 18.5 percent of support calls.

The shift partly supports Apple's distaste for netbooks. Executives have often commented that they don't believe they can produce a high-quality system at the sub-$500 prices demanded by the category. It has also avoided going significantly under $1,000 even for full-size notebooks due to similar concerns and has lately focused on components that are more likely to last, such as the stiffer unibody shell in all MacBooks and a preference for slot-loading optical drives that don't have a tray to break.

with any mobile gadgets that get moved around a lot, they will take their wear n tear, abuse and damage....many mobiles are dropped ! and fail shorty after... many mobiles have owners that don't handle hardware and its software correctly... computer industry wants to sell you $15 grand a year in electronics goodies !

although have had POS HP laps in the past and well babied never let the coffee table with screen backlights failing within a year... Dell, Lenovo, HP, Sonys Suck ! all of us FSEs use the corp business models.... Toshiba and ASUS last better.... the CAD designers use the MAC desktops and are supergeeked with processor power and memory to handle the intensive schematic renderings .... Durabook and Toughbooks are the way a moble's case should be made... newer mainstream models have cheaper cases brought to you by Compel... and yes the Mac cases have lower cost Chinese cases as well

iMac sales up 74%

December 14, 2009 5:15 PM PST
High volume of Mac sales may account for iMac delay
by Jim Dalrymple

Apple's delay in shipping the 27-inch iMac may have more to do with the sheer volume of sales than any problems with the graphics chips, according to numbers from market research firm NPD.

Stephen Baker, NPD's vice president of industry analysis, told CNET on Monday that for October and November, Mac desktop sales were up 74 percent over the same period last year. While NPD did not break the numbers down by desktop model, it's clear the iMac is a top seller.

In fact, the 27-inch iMac appears to be selling so well, it could account for the shipping delay that Apple apologized for on Sunday.

"It's not surprising Apple would be having problems supplying them [iMacs]," said Baker. "I can't imagine in their wildest dreams they would have thought they would sell like this."

Reports over the weekend suggested Apple was delaying shipments of the 27-inch iMac due to reported problems with the graphics card. While those issues remain, it may not be the root cause of the delay.

The surge in Mac sales was not limited to the 27-inch model. Baker said that the 21.5-inch iMac and the Mac mini are also doing very well.

Piper Jaffray financial analyst Gene Munster estimated in a research note to clients on Monday that Apple could sell 2.9 million to 3 million Macs for the current quarter, according to a report on AppleInsider. Munster cautioned that approximately 50 percent of all Mac sales for the quarter happen in December, so that number could change.

Mac notebooks saw a 5 percent increase for October and November, while iPod sales were down 11 percent year-over-year for the same time period.

Any up-date on this topic ?

I am thinking of buying a laptop computer within the next 1 month

Can anyone recommend a good brand, model and specifications ?

My budget is from US 850 to US $ 1,350.00 ( 25,000 bahts to 40,000 bahts )

Is a laptop computer better than a tablet computer ? What are the pros and cons ???

Thank you

I'm very happy with my ASUS laptop, also DELL has good laptops.

There is a next generation of tablets that were presented at the last Comsumer Electronics show, so I'd wait at least until the end of the year if you are thinking of getting a tablet. The changes that are coming are going to be pretty dramatic, and you'll wish you'd have waited, if you get one now.

With a laptop you have a full functioning computer, with a tablet you are very limited. both in processing power, memory, and video card. In simple terms on a laptop you can play full games, and run Adobe Photoshop without any problems. On a tablet you are limited to only those games that are scaled down to run on them, and you can not use the full version of Photoshop, just as an example of the level of computing power you don't have with a tablet.

... can anyone verify if the "ThinkPad" brand of Lenovo notebooks is not controlled exclusively by Lenovo?

... a pretty tech savvy guy I think has credibility told me:

(i) that Lenovo is exploiting the IBM's former reputation for quality notebooks while significantly compromising on the quality for which they were known; and,

(ii) the "ThinkPad" branded Lenovo notebooks are maintaining the former IBM notebook quality because the brand is controlled by investors other than Lenovo.

... he said, sure, buy a ThinkPad branded Lenovo, but not a plain Lenovo machine.

... any truth to this?

I would assume that with Lenova being totally owned by the Chinese that all of their products are controlled by them. Lenova has a good reputation, and is slowly gaining market share everywhere.

If they were trying to gain market share from IBM's reputation, they wouldn't be branding the Lenova name so heavily. They don't really make any inference to IBM in any of their marketing.
