my young sweetie in bangkok gave me her cell phone number before i left, but my attempts to call from the USA have been unsuccessful. the number she gave me: 070321XXX (didn't think i'ld give yall her full number did ya?). i have tried prefixing 011 (international longdisatance from usa) then 66 (thailand country code) then her number - it doesn't work. someone said to add a 2 after the 66 (area code for bangkok) but that doesn't work. someone said drop the leading zero in her phone number etc etc. i did get it to worke ONCE, but i didn't write it down. i get wrong numbers - people speaking thai to me, "call back service - press 1 for english" but i dont' know what that is and i don't think it shows my number in the USA, beeps and "sorry the call can't be completed as dialed" messages etc etc
i tried calling the hotel i was staying at - using the number(s) on the business card... same confusion.
can anyone give me the exact number sequence that works from the USA? for calling cell phones (like hers), land lines (like the hotel) and to send faxes? TIA!

Hi there Nightfall,
when i call from the UK, I prefix the number with:
00 66 & omit the first digit of her number , therefore try dialling
00 66 70321XXX

Call your local international operator and ask there.
I do know the answer... but shit! the extreme to which something as simple as calling an international number some guys make difficult!
YES drop the zero!!!!! That is the way to do it. -the one before the 7, not the one before the 3!!
BTW, maybe she gave you a wrong number, or it is switched off or it is disconnected for lack of payment. And of course you are going to get someonhe talking to you in Thai. What were you expecting? To call Mongolia and get someone talking to you in Swahili?

there are some phone companies that discount the price of a call to Thailand. I use a company called TeleDiscount from my mobile to call - though it is still expensive, it is cheaper than calling direct. I may try phonecards, as i believe these are even cheaper.
Anybody know of other good companies that provide a discounted service?

The cheapest I've found is http://www.thaitel.com -- I can get 6.5 cents from the US to BKK.. and 3.something if I call after 2am BKK time, which I do quite often. Much cheaper than other options I've found...

I use http://www.call2bangkok.com for cheap calls to Thailand. I've purchased them on the Net before, using my credit card without any problems. The cheapest prices are usually for calls to Bangkok house phones within a limited timeframe. Calls to mobiles are often 3 times the house phone rate. Always check to see how they price each call e.g. in 1 minute or in 3 minute blocks. You will also find a large range of cards if you do a google search for 'iToll Thai phonecards.'

From the UK I use Communication 2000.....about 15p a minute to Thailand. I know last time I was there my home phone was 1.14 per minute.
You pay on account in advance and can dial in through any phone, but I think not phone boxes. it's an 0800 number so you don't get the local access charges that some of these companies rip you off with. (They say 15p a minute to Thailand which is true, but the number you dial in has a local cost of say 5p per minute)
They have a website but I couldn't find it with a quick search.....but you should be able to with a bit more time.

Hi Everybody,
Sorry for the shameless promotion but I have created a new website specifically to help people to call to and from Thailand. Whilst the site only went online last week there is still loads of information. Currently the site is set up mainly to help people calling FROM Thailand however you can call TO Thailand from the USA and most western countries for around 15 cents (US) a minute using either a callback system or using a 'Cheap Charlie' Calling card. Both of these systems DO NOT use the internet so quality is as good as direct dialling.

Right now I'm doing all I can to get myself known so any advice on the site contents and layout is greatly appreciated.

This is a cell phone # ... 011 is the USA prefix to call out. Every country is different so do not use that UK # someone else suggested. And if you are in an office and you need to dial 9 to get a outside line then 9 011 7 0321xxx
