Can anyone tell me more about IPSTAR?

I have seen people write that the service can be unreliable due to weather factors such as rain and other atmospherically disturbance, that to get service if there are any problems is quite slow and unreliable etc. Where are you using it? I have thought about getting it here in Bangkok, but I am not sure if it is worth it. The price compared to the downloading speed (I don't care about uploading), service in Bangkok and other factors.

I am currently using True package "40 times 2560/512". I just want to throw myself or the PC equipment and modems out from the balcony. It is the most frustrating thing I ever have experienced. It is sooooo SLOOOOOWWW. I can't believe it. I was using the Nera World Communicator (http://www.outfittersatellite.com/m4.htm) when I was posted in Baghdad before the war, and even that equipment had better speed and reliability that what I get from True. And I am now living in Sukhumvit, soi 39.

Could members at this forum that has experience with IPSTAR please give me some advice? It seems that most people that are using this service are in far away places like on an island or far up-North. Are the any IPSTAR users in Bangkok and if there is, what are your opinion about IPSTAR?

Are there anyone that are using IPTV and are you satisfied with this, please explain more closely about this service. I am using UBC CAtv at the moment.

I have had IPSTAR at my house for the past year or so. We are feeding five houses off of it, with a WAN at each house. We are located outside of Pattaya. It is true that rain fade can be experienced during extremely heavy rain storms, but other than that the reliability is wonderful. I would recommend IPSTAR to anyone. I think it is great. However, in Bkk there are more alternatives such as IDSL, I think cable is available, etc.

OK I have a totally opposite view. I used this service for a year for a business here of which Internet surfing seems to be the main task amoung employees.

Anyhow during rain forgot it and it rains a lot here.

Second it is a share system unless you want to pay big bucks say 42K amonth and get a dedicated channel. As more users log on the latency time to typing characters is substantial to the point of unusablity.

So at 3:00 PM inthe afternoon when I am assuming most school kids start gaming the system goes to a crawel.

I actually discussed these problems with IPSTAR at their headquarters and they acknowledge the problem. They said they will be putting a new satellite in orbit with hiogh speed operation, but that keeps on getting postponed asthe company who is making it (LORAL) went bankrupt.

I switched toa leased line as ADSL or Cable modem is unavailable in my area. This is much better.

So unless this is your only high-speed I would consider others and actually using IPSTAR in the afternoon I went back to a regular modem as it was faster.

If you're using CATV you should be able to use TA's affiliate (forgot the name, check TA website or Google) who has two-way cable service.

I can address the IPTV portion of the question.

It is very affordable, at around 200 baht a month. You get the channels depicted on the True website. No mega-complaints there, though the pickings are rather slim. It is more crucial to me that a healthy selection of Thai TV channels are included in the package, as that keeps the wife and family occupied. I do appreciate that they offer Fox News rather than CNN, but that is a personal bias.

Be advised that you will get socked for around 8,000 baht one time. When I asked about this, I was informed that it was something like a one year subscription fee or deposit. Not sure. I got a little sour about it, but costs have been at around 200 baht a month at all other times, and I consider it strong value for the money.

We lose the signal occasionally, most often when it rains, but rebooting the set top device, or the router, restores service in most cases. I cannot recall ever experiencing an extended service outage.

There are no sports channels offered. That is a key hole in the programming. There are two cartoon channels, which is great for kids. They offer Fashion TV, which is nice. Two movie channels.

I do not watch it much, mostly because I am spoiled. I am still in a state of disbelief that the Philippines, for example, could have so much more, and so much better, television programming.

I used IPSTAR in Udorn for a few weeks and it would sometimes go down for days at a time, even w/o bad weather

resetting the box did no good either

So your thinking to swap decent TV in the Phillipines attached to large horrible pussies, for not so good TV with nice Thai pussy???
Strange choice

But who am I to judge

ROTFL !!! Those people at headquarters do really have a great sense of humor...

But I wonder could there be other reason why they are not able or willing to put another satellite with "high speed operation" in orbit??? Things like political/business climate or even business model, for example...

Heh.

Never. That is a primary reason why I am here. Strangely, I found that I had more to talk about with Buddhist Thai girls than I did with Christian Filipinas who ostensibly spoke English.

Thai girls are skinnier, too.

All that aside....the PI is very much a third world country. Still. Thailand....you can get virtually anything that you desire here, if you can afford it. Like a Lotus sports car, or a Maserati, or an Aston Martin.

You just cannot get good TV.

I blame the government.

;)
