Does anybody know of any prepaid ISP card in Bangkk. I am planning to get a sim card for my GSM bluetooth phone and then use the phone and my laptop to connect to the internet. I will connect for 10-15 minutes every day when I am in Bangkok. I need to check my stocks (place limit orders etc, if needed), pay some bills, and move money (if needed) from one account to another. Is it a good option or it is a very expensive proposition. Also, is it free to use wifi laptop to connect to internet in Starbucks? Any other solutions besides going to a Internet Cafe. Two weeks to go and I am counting.

You can go to almost any 7/11 and get a pre-paid card for loxinfo or ji-internet for a few hunder baht, I've used both and they are ok. If your laptop as a modem built in, you're probably better off using that one, as you'll get higher speeds. Most hotels can provide you with a cable to connect your laptop to the phone sytem.

Hope that helps,
TT

For dialup, temporary kits from Inet (Inet-Easy) are also a good choice. Good modem connections speeds and throughput most of the time.

As a rule, the more time you buy, the cheaper it will be per hour. Inet's 80 hour kit sells for 800 baht for example and even the smallest kit shouldn't set you back more than 15 baht per hour.

If you do have a modem built in to your laptop, that really is the way to go, if the hotel doesn't charge a per-minute rate or drop your calls after a preset period [often 10 minutes].

You don't need a special cable, just use the one that normally connects to the phone in your hotel room.

As long as you have direct dial out of the room -- not operator assisted -- you're good to go. Just set up the modem to dial something like 9,026855700

9 [or other] to get an outside line
, in case there's a lag [the comma makes the modem pause a few seconds]
and the rest is the number for one on Inet's 56K BKK modem banks as an example.
