I am spending more and more time in Thailand and want to get an El Cheapo and only pay when I use it. I can tell you every type of button and uniform American soldiers wore in WW2 but I no nothing about cell phones. Please advise. Thank you

If you go to MBK they have loadsa wee shops that sell pre-used 'phones. I've never seen the Spanish make that you mention but the prices are Baht 3k and up. After you buy the beast you have to get a starter pack (the 'phone seller should have them) that costs about Baht 250 that includes Baht 50 worth of airtime. You can choose which company you want to work with and 1 2 call is my recommendation. You then choose from a selection of "lucky numbers"! Get the 'phone seller to make the initial call to register it for you. This only takes a few mins, then off you go to yer local 7/11 and ask for a 1 2 call card (pronounced, "one two call"). There are different values (I usually go for Baht 300 or Baht 500), but they expire after a while! Just keep buying the 1 2 call cards as you need, sorted! Cheers PS. The downside is that if you don't get back soon enough to keep yer 'phone current then you'll have to get another starter pack etc...

and seriously, any further questions consult your local BG. They will know all about. And they will borrow your phone as not to use their minutes. I recommend Nokia (just very user friendly IMHO)

Would 3-4 months be soon enough?

That depends on how many minutes you buy. The more you buy, the longer your minutes have until they expire. I don't remember all of the specifics, but my first purchase gave me maybe 60 days. By the time I left, my minutes were (and still are) good until this coming summer. I'm sure there are others here who could let you know the specifics.

Let's give you the lowdown: Depending on the card you buy: 300 baht - 30 days 500 baht - 50 days 800 baht - 80 days Eg If you buy 3 800 baht cards on a certain date, you add 240 days to your expiry date. In other words your sim wil expire 240 + 7 days. One way to make sure you're not runnig out of time is to give money and your sim card to somebody staying permanently in Bangkok and let him top up.

I managed to get your make el cheapo for 1600 Baht in MBK for a "friend" then you will need to buy the sim and top it up as has already been said. You can top up to 12 months in advance but I cannot remember the max Baht you can put in. But as has been said any bg will assist

I wonder if BGs know... they live by the day (month) and usually have no money in their phone. They are the least concerned about expiry dates.
