Hi All,

I hate to open a new topic here, but I've taken a look at all 25 topics under "Tech" and none have answers to my questions.

I'm a cherry boy here in Thailand. I've brought my cell phone, a Nokia 2100, from Philippines. I need a SIM card.

In Philippines there are four brands of SIMs available. After having lived there for quite some time I'm aware of the dis/advantages of each... but here in Thailand I haven't a clue.

What would YOU buy? Where in Bangkok would you buy it? Would it also work in Cambodia?

Can anybody help out a newbie?

Thanks.

Yes.

Search in the other 300 topics on the next pages. I am sure you'll find what you are looking for.

Sim cards / unlocking of phones have been discussed over and over again.

Don't be lazy, newbie! Search!

On that same note.......
Thai SIM Cards will not work in Cambodia.

Just came from PH two months ago and tried it.

Getting a Mobitel SIM Card for Cambodia is a little difficult. I brought it at my hotel and had to sign a statement declaring that I will not use my phone for criminal activity.

Calling international in Cambodia is a little on the expensive side, just to let you know.

I would buy 1-2-Call from Advanced Info Service. Avaliable at any mall. Usually the shop will have a list of available numbers stuck in the window. Telewiz pops to mind. Another Shinawatra company.

btw - I UTFSE - from the links along the top - between "Help" & "Last 25" - make sure the black dot is in "Key Words" Open the drop down & choose 'Both". Type SIM into "search by" box. Narrow your search to "Shopping" you get lots of hits on SIM cards.

That's news to me, I didn't think you were allowed to buy a sim in Cambodia if you were a tourist? However the simple thing I was told to do is just get a moto driver to buy one for you. Get a moto you trust and give him the money, he can get one then will give it to you.

DR Love,

Yes many posts on sims and I have read all of them (I think). Still waiting to figure out if there is a pre-paid sim that will let me e-mail my pics from my phone back to myself after my phones memory is full. It sucks having a camera phone but then running out of memory and having to delete the pics. Would much rather e-mail them to myself but still can't figure out if there is a prepaid sim that will let me do this?

I have checked all the web sites and I know you can with some of the ones you pay monthly for but not sure about prepaid ones.

PS Doc at 25 threads per page and 10 pages I think the total in tech would be 250 not 300 but just splitting hairs on this minor detail

1-2 Call costs a heck of a lot more than DTac which was just 100 baht initialy and range is as good as 12call if not better.

AlsoI got more talktime with Dtac than when I used 12call

My 1-2-call SIM/number allows me to do that, and I would assume any other SIM/phone provider that supports GPRS should let you do so - the key is that you need to request the service, and confirgure your phone for local support -- 1-2-call sends you configuration messages, or if you have a Nokia phone, you can have Nokia's website send you the proper configuration messages.

You then need to set up your phone with your e-mail configuration (now it will let you check your e-mail as well, and send images as e-mail enclosures). Mark all pics you want to send, and away you go.

I have my local site configured to allow me to just upload all my pictures using a custom upload script from my Nokia 6600 (works on Nokia Symbian phones, only), which does the trick rather nicely.

PM me if you have further questions.

Dr. von Quack!

The phone I have with a camera is a t616 Sony. I configured it back home but didn't know you had to request the service.

Thanks will do that next time. Didn't make sense why they wouldn't let you do it, just more money for them as you use the service.

I don't really care if it cost more then DTAC as I will not be using it that much anyhow, just want the option to send the pics by e-mail.

I assume you mean call the service number and get them to activate the service when you say request the service.

I would not get 1-2-Call. Mind you, I did, a couple years back, but damn! they had a wicked way of rounding up my time. The baht was flying out faster than I could top it up!

On the advise of others, I swithed to Orange in Nov. Good move! Calls are in country are b1/min. and Orange seems to round down, as opposed to up. Calling stateside is only b7/minute and connection quality is flawless. The baht goes farther now, way farther.

In sum: Orange is a very good alternative to 1-2-call.

Also Orange has started the 'let's fool the consumer' with their 'THB 1/min 24 hours a day' promotion.

They only advertise the rate for the second and third minute...

5 pm - 11pm THB 4 per minute (for the first 2 minutes), thereafer THB 1 per minute
rest of the day THB 3 first minute, thereafter THB 1 per minute.
