I spend a lot of my time reading this forum but contribute rarely because there are lots of know alls here... I freely admit that I have little to contribute so I don't... But help is needed

All my access previously to this has been from my computer at work here in Thailand... As of today I do not have access from work anymore, as I have been laid off.. so here I am at home...

Long winded I know, but here I am at home and my download times for everything are less than 1kbsec.. I know that is slow, but if it is my settings, I would have no clue how to change them.

My question is..... is there an idiots guide or a local like myself to help me with this little problem

Sorry to hear you were laided off, happened to me too. What kind of connection are you using? You may have had broadband at work, and are now using dial-up at home, so your pipe to the internet is much more narrow.

Your modem will perform some handshaking when connecting to your isp access server to set the baud rate. 1 kb per sec? Is this consistent? Ive noticed the internet servers frequently have intermittent problems here.

Also, try clearing your browser cache, and remove any spyware programs. If other applications are also running slow, check your free disk space and defragment your hard drive.

There are accelerators like Internet Cyclone or if you download Internet Download Accelerator.

Use Google or download.com to find these programs.

I usually don't bother with these "accelerators". All they typically do is mess with the MTU size and maybe also with max transmit window. Some try to do some caching as well, but not that many.

If he already has a slow (or noisy) connection and he gets dropped packets with a large window size set, the re-transmits *could* even make it slower. There is only soo much you can push down a small pipe.

If he is staying around here, he'll probably be better of getting a bigger pipe. Depending on how much he spends on dialup costs (pre-paid access cards for example), he might be better off going for an entry level DSL package, if it's available in his area.

Thanks for the reply guys... I have been using CS internet both at work and at home.. I have since brought the actual computer and modem I was using at work home to compare... the work computer has exactly the same speeds as it had at work... Incidently, my home computer is much newer, as is the modem.. and has relatively recently had a major overall...

so it would seem either my settings on the home computer are very suspect or my modem is not talking nicely.. thanks again

Modem technology has not changed much in recent years. Try clearing your browser cache. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools->Internet Options, and select 'Delete Files', check "Delete all offline content"

Also, you may have unknowingly installed spyware software that is monitoring your surfing habits. Go to http://www.download.com, and try the free spyware doctor (look for red link 'free spyware removal' in the top right of the screen). Alternatively, you can find similar utilities at http://www.pcworld.com

If all apps are running slow, check your free disk space. Click on 'My Computer', right click on 'C' drive, and select 'properties'. If you have less than 5% free disk, remove some unnecessary programs and use 'tools' to defragment your hard drive (screen savers and power management software must be disabled while the defragmenter runs).

Mr Alan
You should look at your modem configuration. That would be under:

Settings
Network and Dial-up Connections
Then select the one for your modem

Then find the "configure" button and select it. It should show the modem speed. If you have an analog modem, set the speed to 57600 or higher (your modem will connect at a lower speed if necessary when you connect). If you have a DSL modem, then set it to a higher speed appropriate to what your ISP provides.

The above instructions may vary somewhat depending on what version of Windows you have.

You say you're using the same ISP, but are you dialing the same access number? I recently purchased an internet package, and have discovered that I'm usually connected at 19,200 bps, and sometimes at 16.800 or even lower. Although the ISP advertises support for 56K, they're limiting it on their end, rather than buying more hardware to increase their capacity to keep up with an increasing customer base.

I am no computer expert but usually I find that very slow modem speeds usually reflect a very poor telephone line. Why not plug a phone into the line you have connected to the modem and listen to the dial tone. Is it clear or is it noisy?
If it is noisy this is what is probably affecting your speed.

If it is noisy, you need to work out whether it is the line going into your condo building that is the problem or whether it is the connection from the condo building to your condo. Best to check with the condo staff first.... then ask the telecoms people.

Noise on the line will certainly affect download speeds, because of all the necessary re-sends, but is unrelated to the modem speed, or baud rate, that is established when you initially connect to your isp, and is displayed in the 'Connected to...' dialog box.
