I saw a screen shot of mapmagic for Bangkok on another site. I found a copy at Asia books in the Landmark hotel, 200 bt. The developer lists a half dozen places to buy on their website http://www.thinknet.co.th/

I like it. It shows BTS and MRT routes and stations. The map shows locations for some of the places that I look for: Majestic Suites, President Solitaire, Nana Plaza, ”Soi Kaoboy”, ”Posedon”. You can adjust points of interest to show only hotels, or river taxi piers, from a list of, maybe, 40 categories. The software is installed from the CD, you don't need a CD plugged in to use it.

It's not perfect. It draws Nana Plaza on the wrong side of the street. It could pan and zoom quicker and smoother. Arrow key navigation would be good. I use ”Street Atlas” in the states, and I rate this about 85% of Street Atlas for the features I use. Features like spoken driving directions I don't use and this doesn't have. Their website lets you download product documentation.

Seems good value if you're a GPS geek. It won't upload or download to a GPS, but it does list latitude and longitude under the cursor. I hadn't seen anything similar, until now, for Bangkok.

SidWenes,

I've bought that software too and really like it. Did find a bug, however: when you use the distance function, and move the mouse from start to way points to destination, it gives you all the info you need, but then doesn't let you get out of that mode without killing the thing via the Windows XP Task Manager. Did you have the same problem?

This must be the same software that was reviewed in the 26 Jan. Database section of Bangkok Post. The reviewer was quite impressed as well. I found it at Kunikiniyo [sp?] bookshop in Emporium. Haven't played with it too much [since I'm a mac addict], but I sure like the hardcopy map they included.

From the software portion- it says it includes map making software. Anyone played with that yet? I had fantasys of a MP oriented map with mouse overs spilling all the juicy details dancing in my head when I read that.

Say, while we're on the subject of maps: anyone know where I could get ahold of a map for the ferry services working the Chaophraya river?

I also have purchased this software, but haven't played around with it much yet.

Alternatively, for web-based mapping software where you can search for a service or business, try this:

Ballsburstin,

Yeah, it's not a perfect program. The cursor does get boxed, for me, when measuring distance between points. I can press alt key, then M key to pull down the "Map" menu and can then select another mode.

Skip,

It looks like "favorites" you add to the map are saved in a binary file format that nobody's going to decipher. I had fantasies, too, of downloading long lists of, uh, sight seeing attractions, but it may not happen just for this product.
