I know what spyware is but I don't get it.

Some company put spyware on your computer and the they sell that info to companys. I know that. They have a log of every f***ing thing a person does on a computer. Go to a car site and that company sells your surfing to some kind of company involved with a car.

OK.

Spyware destroys computers. Slows down the computer and eats up memory.

I read an extensive article by an Orange County Register reposter about the spyware he got on his home computer. He said he considered himself pretty computer savey (sp?) but nevertheless went through hell dealing with it. He explained in the article that companies pay for pop ups.

I'm not expressing myself well, I know. Format change.

1. Companys (Fortune 500 companys included) pay for popups. These same companys pay massive amounts of money to protect themselves from spyware that they support!

2. Nobody (I assume) likes pop ups. Who would buy anything as a result of a pop up on their computer?

3. Spyware destroys computers. Corrupts files and eat up memory.

4. Anti spyware companies. They have a vested interest in spyware continuing. Are they a part of the problem?

5. I bought Webroots program. Didn't work. They kept sending me updated programs to use. I sent them log reports. Got to the point after deleting tons of stuff on my computer where the Webroot scam (not misspelled, simply my feelings) said "congratulations, your computer is free of spyware and adware". I still continued to delete shit and when I got far into some files I would get the Webroot notice that "Adbouncer has been detected running in memory, would you like to run a scan now to eliminate it. How possible, I was just told I was free of it. Webroot addresed Adbouncer in its scan and it was still there.

6. I don't like censorship or lots of government regulations but it seems to me that this thing has gotten out of hand. I know that some of the spyware companys may operate in unregulated countries but nevertheless, there must be some way to address the issue.

Any thoughts on the matter?

P.S. Sorry the post is a bit f***ed up. Trust me I could be more concise and clearer speaking vis a vie.

Worst I got was a toolbar that was "MyWebSearch", or something like that. It got installed when I downloaded either some smileys or a screen saver. It was ambiguously stated in the 'agreement', but who reads those? Anyway, turns out it was actually blocking the google and yahoo sites just to try to force me into using their search engine. Also found it in an internet cafe here and alerted the staff, but at least it included an uninstall program with it, so it was easy to get rid of.

Download the google or msn toolbar to suppress popups, they stop almost all of them.

Usually need to use more than one spyware remover to get rid of all the spyware garbage.

Most 'spyware removers' are actually spyware that removes all but their own.

Most 'smiley bars' or 'tool bars' are actually spyware installers.

Most people are connec into installing spyware by promising them smileys, or toolbars, or 'warning, click here to remove your spyware', or some such crap.

The majority of spyware these days either:

- competes to divert your web browser's home page to their own home page.
- competes to divert your web search to their own search.
- Once you have a good number of these installed, they each compete with each other, constantly resetting these locations -- as a result, your web browser runs extremely slowly, and takes forever to start up.
- most of these 'tool's also disable the 'advnaced' tab in your IE preferences, so you can't change back (nice, ain't it?)
- lately, spyware/malware also installs mail functionality, allowing remote systems to commandeer your system as an e-mail relay - so they can send millions of pieces of spam out, using your computer? Why? So your computer gets blacklisted, not theirs.

The main reason why large companies buy pop-up advert space is not because they are in league with spyware makers, but rather because the execs in charge of advertising are clueless (now, there's news, right?) and believe the drivel told to them by pop-up merchants.

It gets so bad these days, that if you get a new PC, and just hook it up to the net, without doing anything, it will get hit and infected within 5 minutes (sometimes as fast as 40 seconds).

What can you do about this?

- install removal tools that work: http://www.hitmanpro.nl
It's in dutch, but it installs pretty much all the tools that you need, it's free, and it works.

- Install FireFox as your web-browser. Remove IE from your system. Most infections are acquired and spread due to bugs and exploits, I mean, features, in IE. FireFox is far more secure.

- Or, just get a Mac - those of us on Macs don't have to deal with any of this, except for maybe pop-ups spawned by a couple of web-sites (but those pop-ups can't infect us either). The choice is simple - labor and suffer under the malware and spyware epidemic, and be forced to constantly work on your PC to even keep it operational, or switch to a real computer and a real operating system (meaning: a computer designed to allow the user to use it as a tool, not the other way around).

MicroSoft has a Anti-SpyWare program that is in beta test and can downloaded for free. It seem to work well.

It's also being critisized by every online site as leaving half the stuff still there, and actually not working very well... which comes as no surprise coming from Microsoft.

Legally obtained copy of what? The operating system? It is beta software and so long as you agree to the license agreement, you can download it for free.

I ran the Microsoft Anti-Spyware program and removed some spyware files. Then I ran Ad-Aware and it did not find any additional files. So it seems to work fairly well for me. The Microsoft Anti-Spyware program also provides real-time protection, whereas the freeware version of Ad-Aware does not.

Microsoft's spyware tool will eventually only work on legitiomate versions of Windows XP - i.e. once the beta version expires. For once, a restriction I understand in that respect, as there are plenty of tries at pirating XP -- still, I feel the suggested free tools by other vendors, or free tools are better options. Microsoft has a less than great record of actually doing something right (starting with the operating, which is one big spyware/malware toolkit).

Certainly, YMMV, but I suspect not by much.
